About the Item

Eileen Gray (1878–1976) was a pioneering Irish designer and architect known for her innovative approach to modernist furniture and interiors. Her work seamlessly blended function with refined aesthetics, often incorporating luxurious materials and geometric forms. Gray was deeply influenced by the Art Deco movement and later embraced the principles of modernism, creating pieces that were both elegant and forward-thinking. The Transat Chair, originally designed in 1927 for her iconic Villa E-1027, is one of Gray’s most celebrated works. The version from c. 1995 maintains her original vision, featuring a sleek, adjustable frame made of lacquered beech and nickel-plated brass, combined with a leather-upholstered seat. Inspired by transatlantic ocean liner deck chairs, the Transat Chair embodies Gray’s fascination with travel, luxury, and minimalism. Its angular structure and precise detailing reflect her mastery of both craftsmanship and material innovation. Gray’s contributions to design were often overshadowed during her lifetime, but her work has since been widely recognized for its influence on modern furniture design. The Transat Chair remains a striking example of her ability to merge comfort with radical, geometric forms, securing her legacy as one of the most important designers of the 20th century.
