Shop Antique and Vintage Chairs on 1stDibs: Lounge Chairs, Dining Chairs and Other Seating for Sale

Chairs are an indispensable component of your home and office. Can you imagine your life without the vintage, new or antique chairs you love?

With the exception of rocking chairs, the majority of the seating in our homes today — Windsor chairs, chaise longues, wingback chairs — originated in either England or France. Art Nouveau chairs, the style of which also originated in those regions, embraced the inherent magnificence of the natural world with decorative flourishes and refined designs that blended both curved and geometric contour lines. While craftsmanship and styles have evolved in the past century, chairs have had a singular significance in our lives, no matter what your favorite chair looks like.

“The chair is the piece of furniture that is closest to human beings,” said Hans Wegner. The revered Danish cabinetmaker and furniture designer was prolific, having designed nearly 500 chairs over the course of his lifetime. His beloved designs include the Wishbone chair, the wingback Papa Bear chair and many more.

Other designers of Scandinavian modernist chairs introduced new dynamics to this staple with sculptural flowing lines, curvaceous shapes and efficient functionality. The Paimio armchair, Swan chair and Panton chair are vintage works of Finnish and Danish seating that left an indelible mark on the history of good furniture design.

“What works good is better than what looks good, because what works good lasts,” said Ray Eames.

Visionary polymaths Ray and Charles Eames experimented with bent plywood and fiberglass with the goal of producing affordable furniture for a mass market. Like other celebrated mid-century modern furniture designers of elegant low-profile furnishings — among them Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Finn Juhl — the Eameses considered ergonomic support, durability and cost, all of which should be top of mind when shopping for the perfect chair. The mid-century years yielded many popular chairs.

The Eameses introduced numerous icons for manufacturer Herman Miller, such as the Eames lounge chair and ottoman, molded plywood dining chairs the DCM and DCW (which can be artfully mismatched around your dining table) and a wealth of other treasured pieces for the home and office.

A good chair anchors us to a place and can become an object of timeless appeal. Take a seat and browse the rich variety of vintage, new and antique chairs on 1stDibs today.

Questions About Chairs

  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 9, 2024
The easiest way to tell how old your chair is on your own is to look for a maker's mark or label. Usually, you will find it under the seat or on the base or frame. Once you know the maker, you can conduct online research using trusted resources to learn when it manufactured chairs similar to yours. If you can't find a mark, the materials, style and how the chair was made can help you estimate its age. Familiarizing yourself with different furniture styles can get you started. If you'd like assistance dating your chair, consult a certified appraiser or experienced antique dealer. On 1stDibs, shop a large collection of chairs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 29, 2024
To tell a quality chair apart from less finely crafted pieces, try gently pushing on the frame. Any creaking, wobbling or shaking may indicate a lesser-quality piece. Materials like solid wood and stainless steel can also be a good indication of quality, as can upholstery materials like leather and linen. If the chair's frame is visible, you can also inspect the joints to ensure that they are tight and properly secured. On 1stDibs, explore a wide variety of antique, vintage and contemporary chairs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024
The standard height of a chair depends on its type. Generally, experts discuss the seat height of chairs as opposed to their overall height, as the height of the seat determines how well it performs its primary function of providing comfortable seating. The average seat height is 18 to 20 inches, and 16 to 21 inches for office chairs. Most accent chairs have seat heights of around 16 inches. Shop a wide variety of chairs on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 21, 2024
Although the very first chair to be invented is up for speculation, one of the earliest was created during the Early Dynastic Period of Egypt around 3100 B.C. Early chairs produced by the ancient Egyptians usually featured wood construction and upholstery made of leather or cloth. Interestingly, they were much lower than today's chairs, with seat heights of around 10 inches versus the average modern dining chair seat height of 18 to 23 inches. On 1stDibs, find a wide variety of antique, vintage and contemporary chairs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 27, 2024
The standard chair size varies based on the type of seat and is generally represented by seat heights. For dining chairs, the standard seat height is 18 to 23 inches, while accent chairs usually have seat heights of around 16 inches. A standard office chair seat height is 16 to 21 inches, with many models adjusting to suit users' needs. Find a wide range of antique, vintage and contemporary chairs on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 26, 2024
The difference between dining chairs and accent chairs is primarily their function. No one knows for sure who made the first chair. Early records have traced the chair's history back to Ancient Europe and suggest that early forms of seating were used as early as 5,800 years ago. These first chairs were usually wood-wrapped in fabric or leather. At just 10 inches high, their seat heights were much lower than those used today. Shop a wide variety of chairs on 1stDibs.

A nesting chair is an office chair that features a unique space-saving design. When not in use, the seat flips down and the hinged frame of the chair folds, allowing you to push two or more together in a front-to-back arrangement. The chairs can then be stored in a tighter space. On 1stDibs, find a wide range of office chairs from some of the world's top sellers.

A porter's chair is called that due to its history. Early examples of porter's chairs date back to medieval England and France. At that time, households positioned the chairs near the front doors of homes to give the hall porters a place to sit while they waited to receive guests. Although hall porters are less commonly employed in homes today, the upholstered chairs with their curved, deep backs continue to bear the name. On 1stDibs, shop a diverse assortment of antique, vintage and contemporary chairs.

Why the furniture used for seating is called a chair has to do with the history of language. The word comes from the 13th-century English word chaer, which in turn can be traced back to the Latin word cathedra, meaning seat. If that word reminds you of the word cathedral, it's no accident. The word cathedral gets its name from the fact that a cathedral is where the bishop of a parish has his seat. On 1stDibs, shop a wide range of chairs.
