Handsome vintage modern Maurice Villency button black vinyl faux leather cube armchair with chrome legs. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. The bottom of the seat has been re-webbed and two small tears on the outside left arm has been repaired. There are light scuffs on the bottom apron and the front of the right arm of the chair. This is a handsome cube chair by iconic designer Maurice Villency wearing a fabulous black vinyl on the frame of the chair and button tufted black faux leather on the loose seat and back cushions. It has deep wide seating capacity and features low chrome legs with a stretcher and a unique turned diagonal design with the point of the square of the legs facing out creating a diamond look…. It’s STUNNING!! It bares a timeless, classic appearance sure to bring a splash of modern excellence to any room! It will be wonderful in the corner of your bedroom, next to a lovely accent table in your sitting room, flanking the fireplace in the den, or across from your desk in the study.
Maurice Villency began designing in the 1950’s at his own furniture loft in Greenwich Village, New York. He was born in Glasgow Scotland, the son of a cabinet maker and at the age of 19 he moved to the United States with his family and introduced Scandinavian Modern furniture with one of his first successes being a sectional. Like the De Sede model DS-343, the armchair Rex is based on a patented seat study developed over the last two decades by seat expert and physical therapist Bart Van der Heyden. Rex is an armchair that moves with the movements of the person seated. Changes in posture are not just permitted but even encouraged. The armchair presents itself in a novel architecture. The seat shell does not stop at the backrest as usual but extends to pelvis height instead. This is not only a stylish design element but the elementary basis for this sitting revolution. With the extended seat shell, the person seated assumes a different posture when leaning back: if you lean backwards, only the upper part of the backrest moves backwards. Following the movements of the body, this provides gentle support to the spine and the chest opens automatically. The person seated immediately feels a more open posture, which is accompanied by a freedom of sitting.

While this specific seating is known to all for its comfort and familiar form, the history of how your favorite antique or vintage lounge chair came to be is slightly more ambiguous.
Although there are rare armchairs dating back as far as the 17th century, some believe that the origins of the first official “lounge chair” are tied to Hungarian modernist designer-architect Marcel Breuer. Sure, Breuer wasn’t exactly reinventing the wheel when he introduced the Wassily lounge chair in 1925, but his seat was indeed revolutionary for its integration of bent tubular steel.
Officially, a lounge chair is simply defined as a “comfortable armchair,” which allows for the shape and material of the furnishings to be extremely diverse. Whether or not chaise longues make the cut for this category is a matter of frequent debate.
The Eames lounge chair, on the other hand, has come to define somewhat of a universal perception of what a lounge chair can be. Introduced in 1956, the Eames lounger (and its partner in cozy, the ottoman) quickly became staples in television shows, prestigious office buildings and sumptuous living rooms. Venerable American mid-century modern designers Charles and Ray Eames intended for it to be the peak of luxury, which they knew meant taking furniture to the next level of style and comfort. Their chair inspired many modern interpretations of the lounge — as well as numerous copies.
