About the Item

An exceptional early Egg chair and ottoman designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen, Denmark. This example dates precisely to May 1965, confirmed by the original silver foil Fritz Hansen label marked “0565,” and accompanied by the factory-cast “FH” monogram with “Made in Denmark” impressed into the aluminum base. Together, these markings certify original mid-1960s Fritz Hansen manufacture—an increasingly rare convergence of authenticity and early production history. The Egg chair remains one of the most enduring symbols of twentieth-century design. Conceived by Jacobsen in 1958 for the lobby and suites of Copenhagen’s SAS Royal Hotel, it was an experiment in organic form and modern fabrication. Using a revolutionary molded shell of foam over a fiberglass core, Jacobsen achieved a self-contained shape that envelops the sitter while maintaining sculptural poise. The chair’s sweeping curves and generous wings created both visual drama and acoustic privacy—a design simultaneously architectural and intimate. Its balance of engineering precision and handcrafted upholstery epitomized the ideals of postwar Scandinavian modernism: humanistic, elegant, and timelessly functional. This chair belongs to the first generation of Eggs produced without a tilt mechanism, retaining the pure swivel-only construction of Jacobsen’s original Royal SAS design. The absence of later mechanical additions preserves the intended posture and sculptural integrity of the form, offering a crisp, architectural seating angle prized by collectors and curators alike. The chair and matching ottoman have been newly upholstered in premium sumptuous cherry red boucle, chosen to replicate the saturated color and tactile warmth of early Danish textiles. The original cast aluminum bases show a soft, even patina, while the shell retains its flawless curvature and structural precision. Only two minor impressions are visible in the wool—minute and consistent with gentle vintage use. With both the foil label and cast Fritz Hansen hallmark intact, this 1965 set represents a museum-quality example from the first decade of production. It captures the perfect synthesis of innovation, craftsmanship, and sculptural form that defines Arne Jacobsen’s work and the height of Danish modern design. A rare, investment-grade icon for the serious collector or connoisseur of twentieth-century design. Dimensions: -- Ottoman 21″ Wide x 15.5″ Deep x 17″ High
