Cafiero Executive Chair by Vincent Cafiero for Knoll International, Signed

$5,600

About

This prime collectors item is an out of production Vincent Cafiero Executive Desk Chair by Knoll International from the early 1980s. Several things make this example unique from other Cafiero chairs, one is the rare heavy bronze finish base, second is this example is in its original supple deep blue color tufted leather which is in excellent condition, third it is signed with its original Knoll International label with the 655 Madison Avenue address indicating this was an early 1980s collectors example, and fourth because this is the highback Executive variation of the design which is much more sought after than the lowback management chair. The rare five-star bronze finish base with casters is complimented by height adjustment, tilt adjustment and recline adjustment features making it perfect for a creative industry Executive with a Mid-Century Modern 'Mad Men' styled office looking for a rare high quality Executive desk chair that is unique from all of the rest. There are many excellent choices on the market today for Executive office chairs, other great options include the Time Life chair and the Soft Pad chair by Charles Eames for Herman Miller. Also notable is the Otto Zapf chair and the Charles Pollack Executive task chair for Knoll. But there is something special about this chair that the other ones do not have and that is its rarity. This out of production design is rare but coupled with the gorgeous deep blue tufted leather and rare bronze base, this is the chair you want if you want what others don't have. This elegant Cafiero executive desk chair by Vincent Cafeiro for Knoll International would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Post-Modern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as a side chair, dining, cafe or breakfast table chair, conference room chair, office or desk chair, guest chair, lobby chair, swivel armchair or occasional chair ideal in virtually any setting. ABOUT THE DESIGNER: (From Knoll) Vincent Cafiero, USA, b. 1930 After completing design studies at Pratt Institute as well as coursework in business administration, ceramics, and sculpture at Pace University and Texas Western University, Vincent Cafiero found applications for his diverse talents at Knoll. As Senior Designer of the Knoll Planning Unit from 1956 to 1967 he led many of the company’s largest interior design projects, including the milestone CBS interior in 1965. Cafiero coordinated and executed designs for residences, universities, and corporate and executive offices. He was also responsible for Knoll showroom designs in Philadelphia, Boston, and St. Louis. In addition to his work for the Planning Unit, Cafiero designed several pieces of furniture throughout his career with Knoll including the 5800 Series Desk and the Knoll Library Collection. His distinctively rectangular executive seating collection was a reaction to the overly curvaceous “bucket chair” designs popular at the time. About Knoll (Maker)

As a company that produced many of the most famous and iconic furniture designs of the 20th century, Knoll was a chief influence in the rise of modern design in the United States. Led by Florence Knoll, the firm would draw stellar talents such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen into its compass. Their work would help change the face of the American home and office.

The company was formed in 1938 by the German immigrant Hans Knoll. He first worked with his fellow ex-pat, the Danish designer Jens Risom, who created furniture with flowing lines made of wood. While Risom served in World War II, in 1943 Knoll met his future wife, Florence Schust. She had studied and worked with eminent emigré leaders of the Bauhaus, including Mies, Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer. She won Knoll over with Bauhaus notions of industrial arts, and an aesthetic that featured flat and tubular metal frames and angular forms. When Hans died in a car crash in 1955, Florence Knoll was appointed head of the company. It was as much through her holistic approach to design — a core division of the firm was dedicated to planning office systems — as Knoll's mid-century modern furnishings themselves that she brought about the sleek and efficient transformation of the American workplace.

Today, classic Knoll furnishings remain staples of modern design collections and decors. A history of modern design is written in pieces such as Mies’ elegant Barcelona chair, Saarinen’s pedestal Tulip chair, Breuer’s tubular steel Wassily lounge chair and the  grid-patterned Diamond chair by Harry Bertoia. As you can see from the items on the following pages, these designs and others have become timeless emblems of the progressive spirit and sleek sophistication of the best of modernism.
