Knoll Designer Bios
After graduating from Pratt Institute and working with George Nelson, Charles Pollock assembled a portfolio of designs and presented them to Florence Knoll, planning Unit member Vincent Cafiero saw promise in a leather and steel lounge chair and encouraged Pollock to keep working on the design. The 657 Lounge, as it was introduced in 1961, showed the young designer’s precision handling of line, form, and materials.
Pollock again demonstrated his command of line and material when he conceived the 1250 series executive collection, introduced in 1965. His idea for the chair was to use an aluminum “rim,” which outlined the chair as the main structural and design element. This rim would hold the parts together, without any further support; slots in the aluminum held the back shell and the upholstery in place, and the plastic back became rigid only after being fitted into the frame. The resulting design was an achievement in structure and aesthetics, and the chair remains a Knoll classic to this day.
As we remember Pollock's legacy, here is an excerpt from a late 1970s interview with the designer encapsulating his rigorous design philosophy:
You don’t make this arm shaped like that because it is beautiful just by itself. You are integrating an awful lot of different elements all at once. And that is what makes it what it is. … So to me the fascinating part of industrial design or furniture design is, that the very act of having an enormous amount of, what is it called, parameters. You just put so much in to each part that when you look at it, to me, it looks more like it belongs than a Picasso. A Picasso isn’t for anything; it is for the eye. I am not saying I am better than Picasso, but I am saying that this is a genuinely, completely cohesive way of working. I mean, you have got the strength in material, you have the way to attach it, you have the shape of it based on what it is attached to. You have the surface of the arm whereby it is wider so that you can put it on and it’s also shaped like this. I mean you just fiddle with it forever and run back and forth to the factory and talk to Mrs. Knoll forever until finally it just gels. Once again, it is a developmental system.
This chair is in good vintage condition, we have had a small repair patch worked into the base line of the leather, the chair has been cleaned and waxed and that’s it, we can have the piece completely redyed to match a smokey vintage aged brown whiskey colour should the new owner wish for a more luxury finish however we have chosen to keep the original colour and finish

About Knoll (Manufacturer)
As a company that produced many of the most famous and iconic furniture designs of the 20th century, Knoll was a chief influence in the rise of modern design in the United States. Led by Florence Knoll, the firm would draw stellar talents such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen into its compass. Their work would help change the face of the American home and office.
The company was formed in 1938 by the German immigrant Hans Knoll. He first worked with his fellow ex-pat, the Danish designer Jens Risom, who created furniture with flowing lines made of wood. While Risom served in World War II, in 1943 Knoll met his future wife, Florence Schust. She had studied and worked with eminent emigré leaders of the Bauhaus, including Mies, Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer. She won Knoll over with Bauhaus notions of industrial arts, and an aesthetic that featured flat and tubular metal frames and angular forms. When Hans died in a car crash in 1955, Florence Knoll was appointed head of the company. It was as much through her holistic approach to design—a core division of the firm was dedicated to planning office systems—as Knoll furnishings themselves that she brought about the sleek and efficient transformation of the American workplace.
Today, classic Knoll furnishings remain staples of modern design collections and decors. A history of modern design is written in pieces such as Mies’ elegant Barcelona Chair, Saarinen’s pedestal Tulip chair, Breuer’s tubular steel Wassily chair and the grid-patterned Diamond chair by Harry Bertoia. As you can see from the items on the following pages, these designs and others have become timeless emblems of the progressive spirit and sleek sophistication of the best of Modernism.
