About the Item

This early Richard Schultz for Knoll daybed sofa is stunning! A standard tuxedo style, mohair-wrapped, and sharper than Brad Pitt’s jawline in the ‘90s. We had this bad boy repholstered in a sumptuous butterscotch mohair, with the quilted seatback, done just like the original spec from the 1950s. It’s the kind of detail that makes design nerds nod approvingly while everyone else just drools. On first glance, it’s all clean lines and angular precision; the sort of architectural sofa that looks as good against a glass curtain wall as it does in a loft filled with books and brass lamps. Take a closer look and you’ll find the quirky genius of Richard Schultz: a concealed mechanism beneath the seat allows the entire cushion block to pull out from the back, transforming the sofa into a daybed with a gentle couple tugs. From cocktail perch to napping bed, this sofa’s got range. Richard Schultz (1926–2021) is most famous for his weather-defying 1966 Outdoor Collection (still in production at Knoll), but his career began inside the Knoll studios in the early 1950s. Trained as an industrial designer, Schultz’s work always balanced technical ingenuity with sculptural simplicity. He was one of the quiet geniuses of postwar design — the kind who could make a mechanism feel as natural as a shadow line. Knoll was the design powerhouse of that era. Founded by Hans and Florence Knoll, the company made it their mission to bring European modernism into American living rooms, working with legends like Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen, and Harry Bertoia. Richard Schultz was part of that ecosystem an American designer given the space to innovate under Florence Knoll’s razor-sharp vision for “total design.” This sofa is early Schultz: clever, angular, and deeply functional, but also ridiculously chic. A tuxedo-framed convertible, upholstered in a shade of mohair so delicious you’ll want to order it on toast. It’s rare, it’s radiant, and it’s ready for its close-up. With the daybed pulled out the daybed portion measures 30.5" D x 83" L With the daybed tucked below, the inside seating portion of the sofa is 24.5"

Grande Divano Curvo Boomerang Sofa, After Gio Ponti, C. 1950
By Gio Ponti
Located in Culver City, CA
This has to be one of the most beautiful sofas our gallery has ever had. This piece is early Italian1950's. Similar to pieces by Gio Ponti, Ico Parisi and Vladimir Kagan this large curved sofa features walnut legs and has been reupholstered in a fine, white, Belgian boucle. The boomerang-shaped sofa is a true masterpiece that embodies the essence of Italian design. Italian modern design is known for its clean lines, bold shapes, and exquisite attention to detail, making them timeless pieces of art that have stood the test of time. This particular sofa, is a stunning piece that exudes elegance and sophistication. The unique boomerang shape of the sofa is both stylish and practical, as it offers a comfortable seating experience while also being a visually striking addition to any room. The sofa is upholstered in a white Belgian boucle fabric, which adds to its luxurious appeal and complements its sleek design. This boomerang shaped sofa measures 90" long on the longer side, and 75" long on the shorter side. This gorgeous sofa could fit into a corner, but hiding those 9 splayed cone legs, and curved back lines wouldn't quite do this sofa justice. This vintage Italian piece is constructed with the highest level of quality. This sofa in particular has 8 way hand tied springs, the seating cushion has springs, the stuffing all horsehair and the upholstery was a worn mohair. We have remarkable photos documenting sofa before and during restoration. While Gio Ponti is regarded as one of the most significant Italian designers; his contemporaries, such as Achille Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, and Ettore Sottsass, also contributed to the world of Italian design. Castiglioni, for instance, was known for his playful and functional designs, while Magistretti was renowned for his minimalist aesthetic. Sottsass, on the other hand, was a pioneer of the Memphis Group, which was known for its bold and colorful designs. We currently have this sofa in the gallery alongside a pair of Jean Royere chairs...

Located in Culver City, CA
This sofa is spectacular! Designed by H.W. Klein for Bramin Mobler in the late 1950's, this sculptural sofa is just as comfortable as it is beautiful. With long, clean lines and arched wingback sides, the body is reminiscent of an Arne Jacobsen egg chair. The back of the sofa showcases the solid teak frame that perfectly cradles the body of the sofa. The teak frame is further accentuated with its rich color and patina that really pops off the white lower-pile fine Belgian boucle...

Important Paul Evans Studio Sculpted Bronze and Resin Sofa, Signed, 1971
By Paul Evans
Located in Culver City, CA
This sofa is strikingly gorgeous! A rare, one of one-- one of a kind sofa designed and executed by Paul Evans. This sofa features an almost sleigh like craftsman base that is very George Nakashima - esque, and is completely clad in Evans sculpted resin and bronze. The sofa has been upholstered in a fine, butter-creamy colored mohair and is not only easy on the eyes, but is incredibly comfortable. This piece is triple signed, featuring Paul Evans initials and date on the bottom of the sofa's shell, another Evans signature and date on the base of the sofa, and a G singed above for (George Fry). One of the most recognizable and important names in the American studio craft movement of the 1960's and 70's, Paul Evans was a groundbreaking pioneer in brutalism. Collaborating as well as sharing a showroom with Phillip Lloyd Powell until 1964 when Evans met the owner of Directional Furniture and created a line of 6 coffee tables to go into the Directional High Point, NC booth for the spring Market. As the story has been recounted by Dorsey Reading, the tables never even made it to the showroom floor. Evans soon found out the tables never even had the opportunity to be sold; obviously disappointed, the `owner of Directional, BG agreed to put the tables out on the showroom floor in New York City to placate Paul Evans. What happened can probably best be compared today with "going viral." The coffee tables started flying off the floor, and the orders came rolling in. This fervor led to Evans creating many designs with Directional in years long partnership-- with the very first series being the "Sculptured Metal" Collection which was publicized in 1968. This piece specifically was not a Directional piece. This piece was created in Paul Evans Studio and ended up being sold directly through the studio. This Sculpted Bronze and Resin sofa is an incredibly rare example of Paul Evans Sculpted bronze technique, which involves hand sculpting using an epoxy resin and coating in an atomized cold cast bronze. Paul Evans used to be labeled kind of a "bad boy" of design-- with an an affinity for sculpted brutalism and pieces that epitomize maximalism, his pieces were collected by rock stars, artists and creatives. Evans, now widely recognized as a pioneer in the American craft movement has solidified his place in design history and is highly collectable. This sofa would look excellent in any mid century modern, brutalist or even contemporary or boho chic environment. While brutalist in nature, this piece can be styled up or down to blend into almost any environment. We currently have this sofa in our gallery paired with a Jean Royere coffee table...
