About the Item

Maarten Baas 'Clay' Piano Stool, Classic Clay Collection, New - Current Production, The Netherlands. The spontaneous and naïve designs of Maarten Baas’ Clay series express artistic vulnerability. Each piece is handmade of industrial clay, covering a steel frame. Arachnid shaky legs or tables and lamps, a chair that barely seems to be able to hold the weight of the owner. Visible handprints make this series utterly personal. This piano stool is from the 'Classic Clay' collection and is adjustable in height (seat height 45 - 60 cm). Available in 8 RAL colors (Custom colors are possible on request and after consultation with the artist, for an additional 20% on the RRP). Plain Clay Where the original Clay pieces are finished with a colored lacquer, the Groninger Museum (NL) commissioned Baas to develop a new version of Clay for their museum restaurant. This new version of the Clay series needed to better withstand daily use. For this new technique called Plain Clay, Baas pigmented the clay at the very start of the production process, instead of painting the frames at the end. Therefore, the material appears more matt and reveals the artist’s fingerprint even better. About Maarten Baas Maarten Baas (1978) is a Dutch artist/ designer, who graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2002. His studio is based in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (NL). Baas is considered one of the most influential artist designers of the early twenty-first century. His works straddle boundaries between art and design. He occupies a unique position in the field, embodying conceptual art, craftsmanship, installation, public space and performance into his oeuvre. He’s known for his rebellious, intellectual, theatrical and artistic style. Baas’ most renowned works are Smoke, Clay and Real Time, that gave him instant worldwide recognition. In 2009, he was named ‘Designer of the Year’ at Design Basel/ Miami. In 2012, the New York Times listed both Smoke and Clay in its ‘Top 25 Design Classics of the Future’. In 2016, Baas won the Artprize for his Real Time Sweepers clock. His works are in private collections of Brad Pitt, Adam Lindemann and Michael Ovitz and permanent museum collections of MoMA (New York); MoMA (San Francisco); Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam); Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam); MAD museum (Paris); Victoria & Albert Museum (London); Die Neue Sammlung Museum (Munich); Victoria Museum (Melbourne); LACMA museum (Los Angeles) and others.
