About the Item

Rare modular bookshelf realized by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Cassina in 1971. Exceptional, Large-Scale, Fully Configurable Composition. This extraordinary and exceptionally rare modular bookshelf system was designed by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Cassina in 1971 and represents one of the most sophisticated examples of the duo’s architectural approach to storage furniture. Conceived as a fully modular, free-standing system, it consists of multiple vertical elements of varying heights that can be arranged in a linear, angled, or semi-circular configuration—allowing for a sculptural presence that adapts to the spatial environment. The system showcases the Scarpas’ signature balance of rational design, material richness, and artisanal detail. Each module is constructed in warm, beautifully aged wood with exposed grain and precise joinery—emphasizing the handcrafted quality typical of early Cassina production. A notable characteristic of this set is its stepped architectural composition: modules of different heights create a dynamic rhythm, giving the ensemble an almost architectural “cityscape” effect. The lower shelves offer open storage, while the upper compartments include: Drop-front cabinets with original locks and hardware Fine internal cabinetry, including graded drawers with dovetail details Sliding trays, ideal for paper, artwork, or documents Pull-out storage boxes Open bookshelves with adjustable heights A black composite or marble-like top on one vertical module, adding contrast and elegance The system sits on a curved black base, which not only visually grounds the composition but also subtly echoes the modular curvature of the individual elements. Designed as a high-end executive or domestic storage system, this piece excels in versatility. It can function as: A library wall A home office storage system A studio or atelier organizer A display and archival unit The diversity of compartments—open, closed, drawer-based—shows the Scarpas’ attention to practical usability without compromising sculptural purity. Afra & Tobia Scarpa’s work for Cassina is highly prized for its synthesis of craftsmanship, proportion, and understated luxury. This particular model, with its rare modular construction and elevated detailing, represents one of their lesser-known but most ambitious storage systems. Its sculptural presence, combined with functional sophistication, makes it ideal for collectors, galleries, important interiors, or architectural spaces in need of a strong and refined design statement. Condition: The system is in very good vintage condition with light signs of age and use consistent with its history. The wood presents a beautiful natural patina, and all compartments function as intended.
