About the Item
A Fine Louis XVI Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Mahogany And Lacquer Commode à Vantaux After The Model by Weisweiler, by Hubert-Joseph Heubès.
The carcass stamped 'HEUBES' and bearing a pseudo 'JACOB JME' stamp. The bronze mounts stamped to the reverse 'HB'.
This elegant mahogany commode is surmounted by a brocatelle jaune d'Espagne marble top. The central door is inset with a fine Japanese gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e lacquer panel on a black ground, depicting buildings in a stylised landscape by the shore, with wading cranes.

Working in Paris in the second half of the 19th century Hubert-Joseph Heubès (1826 - c.1895), was established at 12 rue du Parc-Royal by 1854 and then at 3 rue de la Perle between 1860 and 1876.
Participating in many of the major international exhibitions of the period including the Exposition Universelle of 1867, he was known for the high quality of his work which was often informed by 18th century models, including those by Adam Weisweiler. His furniture was often of a grand scale and mounted with lacquer panels and porcelain plaques, successfully combining an 18th century aesthetic, with the ambition and opulence demanded by his own time.

Hubert-Joseph Heubès
Hubert-Joseph Heubès was established at 12 rue du Parc-Royal by 1854 and then at 3 rue de la Perle between 1860–76. Each commode has a a shaped white marble top above a frieze with two short and one long drawer. Below is a cupboard door with a gilt-bronze framed lacquer panel flanked by two open shelves with gilt-bronze galleries. The commodes are raised on square section tapering legs with gilt-bronze caps.
