Edizioni Nairobi Bar Cabinet by Ettore Sottsass

About the Item

Signed original. Red veneered laminate frame (design E. Sottsass). Base and inner frame with drawer and fold-down tray in black stained wood. Brass handles. For a man that, in the early 1980s, had already turned sixty, hungry for life and colors, smells and travels, shapes and lights, aiming at the “urgent need to reinvent a way to design”, “to plan other spaces, foresee other environments, imagine other lives”, that period must have been quite something. For this reason, Sottsass was ready to write scripts for new visions of domestic totems, as only he could do. In this sense, “see” Cantone, angular elements that can originate tables or constructions like little ziggurats, if combined together or superimposed with each other, highlighted by laminated plastic (Bacterio) which, per se, takes an honored place in the history of this discipline; “remember” the round table Ospite, solid and dynamic at the same time; “think back” to the bar cabinet Nairobi, whose beauty still lights up the eyes, dressed with a reconstituted veneer, once again designed especially for this object. Evident legs or more substantial bases always carefully support those domestic architectures, as Ettore Sottsass never forgot to put the important things in life on a pedestal. Ettore Sottsass was born in Innsbruck in 1917. He got his degree in1939 and started his career in Milan in 1947. He was involved in research and formal experimentation in a variety of fields of expression. He participated in many of Milan’s Triennale shows; he was a Commissioner in the International Section of the 15th exhibition. During the 1970s Sottsass played a lead part in radical architecture and was among the founders of the School for free creativity “Global Tools”; at the same time he wrote for Domus and Casabella. He took part in the major design exhibitions and also staged in numerous one-man shows. He was the conceiver of Memphis, one of the most interesting phenomena in the field of furniture and object design. He did various kinds of teaching; along with his trips abroad to research on various cultures, he held lectures and seminars around the world, achieving a lot of acknowledgments, including a “honorary” degree at the London Royal College of Art. His works and critic interventions are featured in the leading international reviews of architecture and design and they are documented in essays and monographs dedicated to him. He has been working for Zanotta since 1981. He died in 2007.
