Mathieu Matégot 'Escargot' shelf, France ca. 1955

About the Item

The vintage "Escargot" bookshelf, designed by renowned French designer Mathieu Matégot ca. 1955. Crafted from perforated metal and finished with a soft yellow lacquer, this shelf exudes both elegance and functionality. It remains in excellent original condition, normal wear consistent with age and use. Mathieu Matégot (1910-2001) was a renowned Hungarian-born French designer and artist, celebrated for his innovative approach to mid-century modern furniture and lighting design. Born in 1910 in Hungary, Matégot initially studied at the School of Fine Arts in Budapest before moving to France, where he would establish his career. He is best known for his pioneering use of perforated sheet metal, a technique he patented in the 1950s called "Rigitulle." This unique process involved shaping and manipulating metal into flowing, fabric-like forms, which became a hallmark of his work. His designs often combined functionality with a playful aesthetic, characterized by organic shapes, lightness, and bold use of color. Matégot created a range of iconic pieces, including the "Nagasaki" chair, the "Copacabana" chair, and various lighting fixtures that are now considered design classics. His work seamlessly blends industrial materials with artistic craftsmanship, making his creations timeless and highly sought after by collectors.
