About the Item

This important piece of design history was not only designed by Vladimir Kagan and handcrafted by Kagan-Dreyfuss in circa 1949 New York... this was also owned by Kagan himself and kept throughout his entire adult life (see provenance notes below). Each of the two pieces (lower credenza and upper dry bar / hutch) are signed on the back with Kagan-Dreyfuss New York stamps. The expansive size provides exceptional storage and use options. Kagan-Dreyfuss (Vladimir Kagan's partnership with Hugo Dreyfuss from circa 1950-1960) stamped pieces are amongst the most sought after by collectors and investors of art and design. Furniture with Kagan-Dreyfuss stamps are extremely hard to find and demand exceptional value, and this credenza with hutch is double stamped (one on each piece). Featuring a cerused oak exterior, with tambour doors on the lower credenza, sculpted handles (which slide to reveal a keyhole, no key is present however can be rekeyed) on the upper hutch with glass shelves, a black formica pull out table with mirrored and illuminated bar behind the two doors. Inside the lower credenza are open storage spaces with two drawers on the right. Ideal as a sideboard with dry bar, or office credenza with dry bar. Exotic yet refined design for the most discerning client. PROVENANCE: Personal collection of Vladimir Kagan and his wife Erica Wilson, from their NYC apartment. This piece was one of the earliest designs Kagan created for Kagan-Dreyfuss, and was a joint project between Kagan and his father, Illi Kagan (who ran the Kagan-Dreyfuss workshops). This cabinet is very likely the exact one photographed for the book "The Complete Kagan" on page 69. Given this piece was made in circa 1949, it resided with Kagan throughout his entire adult life. We suspect that since this was one of his first pieces, and made in conjunction with his late father, that he kept it throughout the decades for sentimental purposes. PUBLICATIONS: Vladimir Kagan, The Complete Kagan, Pointed Leaf Press, 2004, p. 69 (this sideboard is likely the exact one photographed). MEASUREMENTS: H 62" x W 83.5" x D 22" CONDITION: Professionally restored. There are remnants of prior age and wear under the refinish. Most notably, the top has on one side remnants of staining. We removed as much of the staining as possible and refinished the area so it is only lightly visible now, to have completely removed it would have required us to replace the oak veneer in that section. Given the wear originated from Vladimir Kagan and his wife, we decided to leave it as a part of design history. There are also small repairs made to the oak veneer in several areas, more notably corners and edges. Interior was left original, however we gave it a deep cleaning. There are inserts for sliding glass doors on the left and right sides of the upper hutch however we left them without to give it a more open look and for easier access however new glass panels can be made. Kagan had previously removed the stereo equipment in the lower center cabinet. There were also two cup holders on the upper cabinet doors (interior) which we removed and retained, can be provided upon request. Overall the cabinet is now very attractive, structurally sound and restored, allowing for immediate use in a luxury interior or collectors home or office.

Caned Sculptural Cabinet by Vladimir Kagan for Grosfeld House, 1950s, Signed
By Grosfeld House, Vladimir Kagan
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This very rare sculptural caned cabinet was designed by Vladimir Kagan and crafted by Grosfeld House during the 1950s in New York, documented in early Grosfeld House advertisements (see photos). Featuring sculpted legs, a caned door (with original unaltered caning in excellent vintage condition) with brass handle, and interior outfitted with two compartments, one side with an adjustable shelf. While the cabinet is small in size, it is huge in personality. Vladimir Kagan's works have been highly valued by collectors and art / design investors, and his earlier works in the 1950s for Grosfeld House and Kagan-Dreyfuss are among the most sought after by 'purist collectors' like myself. Why do I prize his 1950s works above all else? I can write a short book on this, but one easy to explain reason is that this was a period unlike the rest of his career, where items produced in this time are hallmarked within that period - a distinction that his later works lacked. Essentially, everything post the early 60s blended together with the decades thereafter. A novice Kagan collector is content with anything by Kagan, even items produced by Directional and American Leather Company...
