NOTE: We have several other pieces by Milo Baughman & Thayer Coggin for sale in separate listings. Check them out!!! You know what they say… sometimes Less is MORE… Well, that statement is an absolute FACT with this incredible ensemble!! This is a Modern Less Is More II Collection modular casegood storage system by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin composed of three separate off white lacquered units or cabinets and 2 single & 1 double brass over wood separators or recessed bases independent from the cabinets. One cabinet features glass double doors, a mirrored back, a single adjustable glass shelf, a brass light bar with a single bulb that illuminates light up or down, and lovely brass hinges & handles. Cabinet two features off-white lacquered wood double doors with a single adjustable shelf inside the unit and the third cabinet has three spacious drawers with tons of storage space!! The Less is More II Collection line surfaced in 1982 with Baughman’s philosophy of quality over quantity. He was quoted in a Knight-Ridder newspaper article stating, “I think a room should have fewer pieces of furniture but better quality furniture.” You are correct Mr. Baughman, size does matter!! And the quality of this line is unparalleled!! Plus… talk about MODULAR MANIA!! You can do a MIRIAD of configurations best suited for your needs. They are all interchangeable and we have 1 double base and 2 single bases however, you don’t HAVE to use the bases/separators if there is a configuration you want to attain without them, you can stack them, line them side by side, or separate them & use a double unit in one room and a single unit in another. Plenty of PERFECTLY pulchritudinous possibilities!! (LOL, it means “beautiful!”) I’m trying to sound super sophisticated folks… we ARE talking about a MILO BAUGHMAN for THAYER COGGIN piece!!! No matter its placement, it is going to make a bold statement in ANY room you choose. It bears refined straight lines, an attractive timeless presence, and an EXCLUSIVE classic Modern style that can only be captured through the undeniable GENIUS collaboration of Baughman & Coggin. One of the most remarkable partnerships in the mid-century modern to modern design world was the phenomenal furniture making duo of Milo Baughman and Thayer Coggin. Milo Baughman, a 20th Century genius of design, was born in Western Kansas in 1923 but was moved a year later by his family to Long Beach, California. He created Milo Baughman Design Inc. in 1947 and began designing interiors and furniture. Thayer Coggin was born in 1922 in Denton, North Carolina. Twelve years later his family moved 25 miles north to High Point where he grew up surrounded by furniture manufacturing. Thayer’s first love was furniture and Milo’s was design. So, together in 1953, after the two met, history was made in American furniture making by one of the greatest collaborations in the industry. During his career and before his death in 2003, Milo did design for several other companies as well as his own, but it is his collaboration with Thayer Coggin that is most impressive and sought-after today. Thayer Coggin, Inc. is still in business today even after its namesake’s death and is still offering classic selections from the late Baughman’s designs. Iconic designer & maker, incomparable style, and unlimited style functions!!! MCM 2-Piece China Hutch Cabinet Buffet by Heywood Wakefield Contessa Collection
By Heywood-Wakefield Co.
Located in Topeka, KS
Mid-Century Modern 2-piece china hutch, cabinet, or buffet by Heywood Wakefield for the Contessa Collection. Comprised of 2-pieces a top hutch & a bottom buffet in a dark cherrywood, woven wicker basket weave or caned door fronts, brass toned pulls, & slim steel legs. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. There are nicks on the left side of the buffet edge toward the front. Stiffener has been added underneath buffet as the cabinet had sagged in the middle making doors uneven. Stiffener corrected that issue. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1960’s. In 1959, the Heywood Wakefield “Contessa” slogan was "Wood for warmth and grace ... steel for strength and rigidity." "Furniture of Slender Elegance." And does this China cabinet ever fit that description. The Contessa line features a darker cherrywood, gold or brass toned accents, and slim steel legs. This cabinet has 2 pieces. A bottom buffet that features brass toned pulls that open two sets of double doors. There are three drawers on the right side with a silverware tray in the top drawer. The left side is open storage. The top hutch features two rolling side doors with woven wicker basket weave, or caned, door fronts and three shelves in the center. The whole cabinet stands on slim steel legs and exudes mid-century modern magnificence! This awesome, versatile china cabinet or buffet will look amazing whether you place it in the dining room, living room, study, or the kitchen. It is adaptable enough to blend right in whether your design style leans to Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern, industrial, southwestern, or modern country. In 1897, two prominent furniture companies, Heywood Brothers and Wakefield Company merged and created Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Company; the name would be shortened to Heywood-Wakefield in 1921. The new company rose to popularity in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s with its solid wood, Art Deco-inspired, mid-century modern furniture. In 1992, South Beach Furniture Company acquired the rights to the Heywood-Wakefield name. After realizing how in demand vintage Heywood Wakefield pieces were, production began on new pieces that remained true to the style, quality, and values of the original company. Today's Heywood-Wakefield is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the name and its famous pieces while incorporating new and contemporary technology which allows new generations to appreciate the classic looks from a classic company. This is a fabulous piece by Heywood Wakefield’s Contessa...
