American Craftsman Furniture

AMERICAN CRAFTSMAN STYLE

Inspired by the Arts & Crafts style in England, which rebelled against the mechanization of the Industrial Revolution with a proud emphasis on handcrafted design, American Craftsman style similarly pushed against the lavishness of the Victorian era. Coined by Wisconsin-born Gustav Stickley, a furniture designer and publisher of The Craftsman magazine, American Craftsman furniture would influence homegrown styles that followed, such as Mission and the Prairie School.

Like the popular early 20th-century Craftsman houses — which feature meticulous woodwork on everything from built-in bookcases in the living room and cabinetry in the kitchen to earth-toned exteriors with exposed rafters — American Craftsman furniture was all about handmade storage cabinets, bedroom furniture, chairs and other pieces built with organic materials. “Simplicity and straightforwardness of construction has always been the leading characteristic of Craftsman furniture,” Stickley stated. And while he is often credited with most of the designs at the Craftsman Workshops in Eastwood, New York, others such as Harvey Ellis were influential in shaping the straight-backed chairs, beds with vertical slats and tables with exposed joinery that came to define the style.

Highly utilitarian with no unnecessary flair, American Craftsman furniture was designed to emphasize the essence of its modest construction and promote the natural beauty of the wood. Solid oak, cherry, walnut and mahogany were all favored by the movement’s principal figures. Another attribute commonly associated with the style is the integration of subtle details like tooled leather, inlaid metal and hammered iron handles.

Owing to the outbreak of World War I, the popularity of American Craftsman style waned as consumer spending dropped and furniture companies shifted to the production of wartime materials and goods specified in government contracts. Yet, by the 1960s, there was a renewed appreciation for this foundational modern American style, with Stickley and his contemporaries in demand for the clean, simple lines and sturdy construction of American Craftsman furniture.

American Studio Movement Sculptural Dragonfly Table by Andrew J Willner, 1973
Located in Brooklyn, NY
A fantastical table in the form of a dragonfly by American Studio craftsman, Andrew J Willner, executed in rare English brown oak, its eight individual sections sculpted by hand and constructed with pegged mortise and tenon joinery. Made during Willner’s tenure as wood artist in residence at Peters Valley School of Crafts, where he worked alongside Emil Milan and Karl Seemuller, this table is exceptionally realized and exemplifies Willner’s interest in the segmented forms of the natural world which became part of his signature fantastical style. Bears the artist’s carved initials and date to the underside, ‘AJW Sept. 73’. Well-preserved, likely refinished at some point. Literature: Meilach, D. Z. (1975). Creating modern furniture (pp. 288–289). New York: Crown Publishers. *depth of top = 17.5 inches *depth of base = 24 inches Andrew Willner is a modern polymath of sorts whose CV credits include those of boat builder, environmentalist, permaculturist, city planner, photographer, and public speaker in addition to master woodworker. He received his earliest training in woodworking in the basement wood shop of his grandfather who ran a lumber business selling reclaimed wood from construction sites. He earned his Bachelor degree in City Planning at the University of Virginia, did his graduate study in furniture design and sculpture under Wendell Castle student, Alan Lazarus, at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1968 and 1969, and became the first woodworking artist in residence at then-experimental and now-renowned Peters Valley School of Crafts in Layton, New Jersey upon its founding in 1970. It was at Peters Valley that Willner first met Emil Milan who was to become his mentor and life-long friend. Examples of Willner’s work are included in the 2018 monograph, Emil Milan: Mid Century Master. In the late 1970s, Willner met Vladimir Kagan at the Rhinebeck Craft Fair - - the chance encounter led to Kagan commissioning a chair design from Willner, to be available in several variations, for a show at Kagan’s NYC gallery. Willner used one of his early, original, bent and laminated designs for the commission and over the course of a year or so, a limited number of examples were sold through the Kagan showroom under the Kagan name with Willner credited as the designer. In 1980, Muppets’ genius, Jim Henson...

Jim Rose Two-Door Housetop Weave Multi-Color Steel Quilt Pattern Cupboard
Located in Chicago, IL
This is a totally functional two-door cupboard. It is created from hot rolled steel and found steel. The legs are made from salvaged pipe. The panels on the door fronts and sides are made from salvaged pieces of steel with the original paint and texture making this modern Industrial aesthetic a model of sustainable design. The pattern is inspired by the Quilts of Gee's Bend Alabama. Prominent colors in this piece are tones of blue, black, gray and blue, gray and rust. There are two fixed shelves inside the cabinet. This piece is available as pictured. Jim Rose Two Door housetop quilt cupboard hot-rolled steel, found painted steel 42 H x 33 W x 17 D in 106.68 H x 83.82 W x 43.18 D cm JR0010 Jim Rose b. 1966 Bio: Born in Indiana, Jim Rose lived in Europe until he returned to the United States to attend college. After one year at Bard College, Jim transferred to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC) where he graduated in 1988 with a BFA. His skillful interpretation of the Shaker design is a result of intense research and field study of Shaker furniture, architecture, culture and history. After over two decades of dedicated work, he has mastered the minimalism of the Shaker technique and created his own unique visual vernacular. The quilts of Gee's Bend have become a monumental influence taking this artist's work to new levels of unique interpretation and artistry. His selection of aged steel results in a patina directly related to that of aged wood while his colored strips beautifully mimic worn cloth. Each piece of furniture is masterfully made and intended for daily use. Jim Rose’s steel furniture is featured every year at SOFA Chicago for the past 25 years.
