Rococo Furniture

ROCOCO STYLE

Rococo was an aesthetic movement in the fine and decorative arts in the 18th century that found its inspiration in nature and fostered an overall lightness and delicacy of form, construction and ornament in interior design. Rococo furniture, while greatly influenced by trends in Italy and Germany, is often called Louis XV style — the movement having reached its best expression during that sybaritic French king’s reign.

The term “rococo” is thought to be a portmanteau of the French words rocaille and coquilles — “rock” and “shells” — organic motifs frequently used in architecture and design of the style.

When it comes to authentic Rococo furniture's characteristics, it is above all sensuous and social. The furniture of earlier eras in Europe had been heavy in every sense; the Rococo period saw the appearance of light-framed upholstered armchairs, side chairs and occasional tables that could easily be moved to form conversational circles.

The signal detail of Rococo furniture design is the gently curved cabriole, or S-shaped chair-, table-, and cabinet-leg. It imitates the bend of a tree limb or a flower stem. In a further reference to nature, furnishings were often asymmetrical and painted white, or in soft, pastel shades. Rococo has become a timeless style, and as the furniture pieces presented on 1stDibs demonstrate, its playful, sculptural forms can provide visual excitement to contemporary, clean-lined spaces.

A Pair of Magnificent Giltwood Armchairs
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A Pair of Magnificent Giltwood Armchairs. Each magnificent throne chair with oval padded back encircled by an elaborate cresting carved with flowering acanthus, oak branches, and fleurs-de-lis. The top rail with two putti holding an armorial star-shaped cartouche with the interlaced L's of Louis XVIII, King of France, titled ‘Bordeaux 12 Mars 1814’, beneath a crown. This armourial cartouche is the Order of the Armband of Bordeaux. The open arms with padded armrests above exuberantly carved sculptural terminals depicting dragons with human faces. The shaped seat rail with ribbon and rocaille ornament and to the front with a star representing the Décoration du Lys. On cabriole legs. Upholstered in flower pressed blue velvet. France, Circa 1820/30. These magnificent throne chairs commemorate an important event in the Bourbon Restoration precipitating the fall of Napoleon I. They celebrate the surrender of the city of Bordeaux to royal power and to King Louis XVIII (1755-1824), heralding the fall of the first Empire (1804-1815). The Duc d'Angoulême (1775-1844), nephew of Louis XVIII and elder son of Charles X, entered the city of Bordeaux to the acclaim of the crowd on 12th March 1814. Louis XVIII later called it ‘the happiest event of my life’ and on the 29 September 1820 named the heir to his throne, not—like previous Bourbon heirs—Duc de Bretagne, or de Bourgogne, but the Duc de Bordeaux. This armourial cartouche to the top rail of these chairs is the Ordre du Brassard de Bordeaux (The Order of the Armband of Bordeaux). It was adopted for the Royal Guard and volunteers who accompanied the Duc d'Angoulême when he entered Bordeaux on 12th March 1814. It was officially called the Brassard de Bordeaux, or Brassard Vert. At first it consisted of a silk band of green with white borders, worn, as the name signifies, on the arm, but was later adapted as a medal with oval gilt sunburst on which is superimposed an oval medallion of white enamel bearing the royal monogram ‘L.L.’, and surrounded by a green enamelled band with the words ‘BORDEAUX 12 MARS 1814’. The whole is surmounted by the royal crown. In 1824 the issue of the Brassard de Bordeaux was controlled by the Royal Order of...

Italian Carved Walnut Chairs with Leather Covers, Milan, circa 1750
Located in Milano, IT
Four carved walnut chairs with leather covers Milan, circa 1750 They measure: 39.37” high, 18.30” to the seat, 21.65” deep x 19.29” (100 cm high, 46.5 cm to the seat, 55 cm deep x 49 cm) State of conservation: - the leather covers are not original; - some signs of use, especially on leather covers; - the rocailles at the height of the backrests have lost part of the carved elements. The four walnut chairs have a mixtilinear structure adorned with rocaille relief carvings; the legs are shaped and end with a curl. The backs and seats are padded and covered with impressed leather with figures and cartouche decorations from later production. Around the mid-eighteenth century in Milan it was very popular to cover seats with impressed leather. Mutton or cowhide was used which, suitably tanned, was then worked with heated irons (hot decoration) or with carved wooden molds (cold decoration). These were impressed on the leather until obtaining a darker brown color. Our group of chairs...

Richard Ginori China Dinner Service with a botanical print by Munting Abraham
By Abraham Munting, Richard Ginori
Located in Roma, IT
A set of dishes made in Italy during the 80s, as attested by the date printed on the back of the plate, but inspired by 18th century porcelain, to be precise inspired by the "Saxon-style", a term which can be ascribed to the 18th-century Germanic tradition, according to which porcelain was made with reliefs similar to woven baskets. This vintage dinner service is produced by a historic Italian manufacturer "Richard Ginori" founded in Tuscany, in Sesto Fiorentino, near Florence, of which Gio Ponti was creative director for 10 years. After declaring bankruptcy in 2013, this historic porcelain factory, in operation since 1735, was taken over by the Gucci group which restarted the production of iconic pieces and novelties inspired by archive pieces of the company. This set of dishes is a rarity as it is the result of an unusual combination that has the 18th century as its common thread, with the Rococo style, the scientific discoveries and the new botanical varieties resulting from the new trade routes of the companions of the Indies. On the classic Richard Ginori series, i.e. the total white motif called "Vecchio Ginori" (currently put back into production by Gucci) always and exclusively produced in total white, a botanical print by Abraham Munting depicting an orange plant was printed. Abraham Munting is a Dutch botanist famous for his unusual illustrations where plant species were depicted against a background of classic or pastoral landscapes, often floating in midair with little regard for perspective and relative sizes, in fact, the orange plant is not forced to inside the center of the plate but goes outside the predefined spaces wrapping it. The dinner set consists of 30 pieces: 6 dessert or appetizer plates with a diameter of 19.5 cm 12 soup plates with a diameter of 23cm 12 dinner plates with a diameter of 24.5 cm The service could be considered for 6 with the double serving plate for soups and second courses, or you could purchase 6 totally white fruit plates...

Pair of George II Style English Giltwood ‘Rococo’ Wall Mirrors
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A Magnificent Pair of George II Style English Carved Giltwood ‘Rococo’ Wall Mirrors After A Design By Thomas Johnson. Of large proportions, each mirror having a cartouche-shaped plate within a profusely carved and pierced branch-entwined frame with stylised acanthus foliate rocaille and ‘C’-scroll decoration, architectural motifs and running dogs, surmounted by an asymmetrical pagoda form cresting with rockwork spires and a seated rustic couple holding a basket, flanked by confronted Ho-Ho birds, with a conforming asymmetrical apron of acanthus and waterwork icicles centred by a perching bird. This magnificent and ornate pair of English wall mirrors or ‘pier glasses’ are refined and reduced from a design by Thomas Johnson (1723–1799) first published in 1756 and included in his ‘Collections of Designs’ (1758), plate 4, and republished in his ‘One Hundred and Fifty New Designs" (1761) as plate 22. Pier Glasses were designed to be placed on the wall or 'pier' between windows; as well as forming part of a decorative scheme they provided an important functional use, creating a reversal of dynamic with the windows at night, reflecting and maximising the light given off by candles or oil lamps. Johnson’s asymmetrical design creates a sense of fluidity and lightness to the mirrors, employing ‘contraste’ in the placing or absence of elements, to create a stylised form, which through the dynamic tension of its constituent parts instils the mirrors with a sense of playfulness and vitality. In London throughout the 1740s and 1750s there developed a great enthusiasm for the whimsical Rococo style, and it rapidly became the height of fashion, popularised, and disseminated throughout the country and further afield by cabinetmakers’ 'Books of Prices', and 'Directories'.
