About the Item

This George Nakashima American black walnut "Slab" Coffee Table with four East Indian rosewood butterfly keys was created in 1963, just after the publication of Nakashima's manifesto. In his manifesto, Nakashima proclaimed “In proportion to the flood of consumer goods, we are probably at one of the lowest ebbs of design excellence the world has seen. It requires a genuine fight to produce one well-designed object of relatively permanent value.” A perfect example of such perfect design with lasting impact, the elegant silhouette of this table offers visual impact that far surpasses its refined proportions. Item #: F-19743 Artist: George Nakashima Circa: 1963 Country: United States Size: 14.5" height, 78" width, 32" depth Materials: East Indian Rosewood; Black Walnut Wood Signed: Marked with client's name "WEINSTEN" Provenance: Elayne and Monroe Weinstein, Poughkeepsie, New York, acquired directly from the artist, 1963 Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: While deceptive in their primitive nature, each Nakashima is a masterpiece of equal measures of artistry and engineering. Nakashima firmly believed that one should never be considered overly precious: “Furniture should be lived with.” A Nakashima coffee table encourages familial harmony, encouraging conversation and contemplation with your loved ones.
