About the Item

Slab coffee table, designed by George Nakashima, made by one of his students, Walter Downs, USA, circa 1957. This slab coffee table was made by Walter Downs during his apprenticeship, working under the supervision of George Nakashima, from 1955 to 1958. Made from walnut, conforming the original design. The Slab Coffee Table is one of Nakashima’s earliest and most iconic expressions of his philosophy, using single, dramatic boards with natural live edges. The base is clean and architectural, allowing the wood’s character to stand at the forefront. Each table is unique, an organic form with precise construction. Provenance: Private Collection of Walter R. Downs, Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA. Shows light wear consistent with age. In good vintage condition.
