Mid-Century 1959 Vintage George Nakashima Slab Coffee Table

About the Item

Japanese American architect, father of the American craft movement, George Nakashima is among the first generation of studio furniture makers and is cited as highly influential to the field of contemporary woodworking. He mainly worked with wood waste and offcuts. Nakashima created asymmetrical forms with fluid contours preserving all the imperfection of the tree he used and turned the defects into stylistic peculiarities. His inspirations include the Japanese tea ceremony, American Shaker furniture and the Zen Buddhist ideals of beauty. This Slab Coffee Table by George Nakashima, crafted in 1959 from American Black Walnut Wood, embodies his philosophy of honoring natural materials. The tabletop retains its organic shape, featuring a live edge that highlights the raw beauty of the wood. A visible butterfly joint reinforces a natural crack, serving both a functional and decorative purpose. The asymmetrical design adds to its uniqueness, with three elegantly tapered legs on one side and a slab-panel support on the other, creating a balanced yet dynamic structure. The hand-finished surface enhances the warmth and depth of the walnut grain, emphasizing Nakashima’s meticulous craftsmanship. This table is a perfect example of his "Soul of a Tree" philosophy, where each piece is shaped by the wood’s inherent character rather than imposed geometric constraints, blending Japanese craftsmanship with mid-century modern aesthetics.
