Born in Spokane, Washington, and educated in architecture at MIT, Nakashima’s work emphasized natural wood forms, often featuring live edges and butterfly joints. His style celebrated the inherent beauty of wood, creating timeless, organic furniture pieces. After being interned during World War II, he established a workshop in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where he developed his influential aesthetic. His legacy continues through his daughter, Mira Nakashima, who runs the Nakashima Woodworkers studio.
