About the Item

Discover the raw energy of mid-century design with this exceptional Paul Evans patchwork side table or low pedestal, circa 1960s, from his renowned Sculpted Metal series for Directional Furniture. Handcrafted in Evans' signature style, the cube form is clad in a dynamic mosaic of welded, enameled, and patinated copper, brass, and steel panels over a sturdy plywood core, creating a tactile, abstract surface that shifts with light and angle—like a sculptural cityscape forged from industrial remnants. The top features an original inset cleft slate slab, adding natural texture and heft. This versatile piece—measuring as a compact side table or low pedestal—exemplifies Paul Evans' fusion of folk artistry and modernism, blending hand-hammered metals with brutalist forms for a piece that's as functional as it is artistic. Ideal as a bedside stand, sculptural accent in a living room, or low plinth for displaying art objects in a gallery-like setting. Produced during Evans' peak collaborative years with woodworker George Nakashima and manufacturer Directional (1964–1977), it carries the patina of authentic age: light verdigris on the copper, minor surface scratches consistent with use, and no structural damage. Patchwork is in overall very good vintage condition. The slate does have a very fine hairline underside. Paul Evans (1931–1987), a pivotal figure in the American Studio Furniture movement, revolutionized mid-century design through his New Hope, Pennsylvania workshop, where he experimented with epoxy-resin bronzing, deep-relief sculptures, and this iconic patchwork technique. A must-have for collectors of Evans, brutalism, or American modernism, this table promises timeless intrigue. The pair of Edward Wormley for Dunbar Slipper Chairs is available in another listing.
