Jacques André Joseph Camelot Aved (12 January 1702 – 4 March 1766), also called le Camelot (The Hawker) and Avet le Batave (The Dutch Avet), was a French painter of the 18th century and one of the main French Rococo portraitists. He painted among others the Ottoman Empire ambassador to France in 1742, Yirmisekizzade Mehmed Said Efendi . His father was a physician and he was orphaned when he was a little boy. He was raised in Amsterdam by one of his uncles, who was a captain in the Dutch army.
After his training in Amsterdam with François Boitard and Bernard Picart, Jacques Aved started working in Paris for Belle in 1721. He later entered at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1731 and he was appointed councilor after graduating in 1734 and in 1759, he took part in his last salon. Extraordinary hand crafted Japanese contemporary traditional oshie decorative art piece with a stunning three-dimensional effect. This is a traditional Japanese handcrafted wall decorative art form using high quality silk and brocade fabrics, known as oshie (literally, “pressed pictures”) that goes back to the Edo period (1603-1868). It is said this art form was born of the reluctance of ladies of the court to discard the magnificent silk kimonos and brocaded obi they had donned for a lifetime. The solution was to recycle these opulent fabrics into stunning works of art.
Oshie resembles a carefully crafted very intricate jigsaw puzzle comprising numerous intricate pieces of kimono fabric padded with slightly differing thicknesses of cotton and painstakingly glued and ironed individually. All those tiny pieces are then glued one by one on a custom-made board making sure each piece lands on the exact right place making sure that the right pieces overlap the lower pieces to create an undulating three-dimesional picture. Highly detailed oshie pieces contain hundreds of small pieces that are expertly aligned to recreate even the minutest details of the the painting In the final process. Facial features are painted in miniature-like exactitude. The end product is an awe-inspiring piece with a surprising three-dimensional effect.
This magnificent piece depicts a fascinating scene of a lady of privilege wearing an exquisitely brocaded headdress and overcoat to protect herself from the cold. Each dainty step she takes exposes the folds of her multi-layered kimono in a scene reminiscent of the ladies of the ancient imperial court of Japan. Extraordinary modernist item by Swedish Tilgmans Keramik. Fully glazed centerpiece or wall decoration depicting a green faced woman with long stemmed yellow and blue flowers on a striped dark blue background created with the sgraffito technique. Manufactured in 1957 by German/Swedish Paul Harald Tilgman in his workshop in a small town close to Gothenburg in Sweden. Blue patterned glaze on the sides and muted blue leaves on the milky white glazed base. Signed and dated on base.

About Tilgmans Keramik:
Paul Harald “Harry” Tilgmann was born in Dresden, Germany in 1904 and emigrated to Sweden during WWII where he started Tilgmans Keramik (= Ceramics) in 1948 in the small town of Utbynäs close to Gothenburg. Tilgman had 16 employees working for him and when he hired the Polish refugee Marian Zawadzki (1912-1978) as artistic director in 1953, Tilgman Keramik started experimenting with the distinct sgraffito technique. The sgraffito technique consists of carving fine lines into the background of a design through a light coloured glaze down to a dark grey clay slip. This created a unique textured ground which has become a style associated with Tilgmans Keramik in particular. The decorative elements also appear to be outlined with a carved line and then hand painted with overglazes where birds, fish, flowers, butterflies and other animals were a common theme. This type of work was the most popular in Mid Century Sweden alongside Tilgmans small animal figurines...
