About the Item

Bring the charm and refinement of French high society into your home with this exquisite suite of four allegorical paintings, crafted in France circa 1760. Each oil on canvas composition depicts charming child-like figures representing the four fine arts "Painting, Music, Sculpture, and Architecture" in the Rococo manner of Charles-André Van Loo. The set is presented in matching carved giltwood frames with beaded and ribbon motifs, beautifully complementing the vivid palette and refined brushwork of the compositions. The quality and execution distinguish these works from studio copies inspired by the celebrated series commissioned by Madame de Pompadour and executed by Carle Van Loo in 1752 for the Salon de Compagnie at the Château de Bellevue. Exhibited at the Salon of 1753, Les Quatre Arts were admired for their innovative depiction of children as allegorical figures, a convention that soon influenced artists such as Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Alexis Grimou. Charles-André Van Loo (1705–1765), known as Carle Van Loo, was one of the leading painters of the French Rococo period. Appointed First Painter to the King in 1762, he earned acclaim for his portraits of European nobility, mythological subjects, and genre scenes of refined elegance. His harmonious compositions and delicate technique made him a favorite of Parisian society and foreign courts alike. This exceptional set of 18th-century French paintings, rich in detail and color, captures the grace and sophistication of Rococo art at its height. Each measures: 33” W x 26” H.
