"The Entombment of Christ, " Fine Copy of Titian Masterpiece, Oil on Canvas
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Beautifully painted, probably in the 19th or early 20th centuries, this copy of the famed "Le Transport du Christ au Tombeau" painting by Titian (Tiziano) in the collection of the Louvre in Paris, was recently found in the attic of a Hudson Valley monastery. The Louvre original, considered an early painting by the master, dates to the same period as his famous "Pastoral Concert" and shows the strong influence of Gorgione. This scene depicts the collaborative efforts of Joseph of Arimathea, Saint John and Nicodemus as they moved Christ's body from the cross to his tomb, watched by the two grieving Marys -- his mother and Mary Magdalene. It is not known who painted this copy, though of course artists over the years have copied the great Master paintings...

‘Les Peintures des Taxidermistes’ No.5, Art Print Photo by Sinke & Van Tongeren
Located in Haarlem, NL
The third series of photographs by Fine Taxidermists Sinke & Van Tongeren After observing and analyzing so many 17th century paintings, they were inspired to create a new series of work focused on still life masterpieces. They chose photography as the medium to portray their fine taxidermy work interpreted through vanitas still life's. The collection, ‘Les Peintures des Taxidermistes’, comprises eight works. Vanitas still lifes were enormously popular in the 17th century, often inspired by biblical themes and the saying that “All is vanity”. It reminded the viewer of his or her own mortality. For these series of still lifes Sinke & van Tongeren not only created meaningful scenes of taxidermy, they also mined their enormous collection of great finds to gather the most beautiful and unusual antiques to complement each scene. Title of this work; ’LA SURVIE DU PLUS FORT‘ Rich textiles are pulled back to reveal a Dutch antique bible that is almost hidden under the powerful presence of the Nile Crocodile skull under an American Alligator skull...

To decorate the wall on top of a console or credenza. On top of a fireplace mantel (fireplace). Neapolitan painting of the early seventeenth century is characterized by dramatic expression, emphatic naturalism, and intense chiaroscuro derived from the profound influence of Caravaggio (1571–1610), who spent a number of his later years in the port city. The younger Neapolitan artists were also influenced by the classicism of Guido Reni. Naples Napoli was governed for decades by wealthy Spanish viceroys and the Austrian Hapsburgs. Ribera’s naturalistic style resonated throughout the new work produced by the young Neapolitan painters such as Luca Giordano painting through an amplified sense of color and a particular sensitivity toward light Neoclassicism Romanticism. Antique and Vintage Paintings for Sale on 1stDibs

When paired with the perfect frame, the right antique and vintage paintings and other wall decorations can either subtly showcase your personality or steal the show altogether.

The earliest paintings were created on the walls of caves, proving even our ancient ancestors knew that striking artwork is meant to be on display. Cave paintings on an Indonesian island are reportedly older than the earliest cave art in Spain and France, and the figurative paintings back then were produced with inorganic pigments like iron oxide.

Later, the people of Ancient Greece — who learned about art from the Egyptians before them — conceived panel paintings of wax and tempera that were collected and publicly displayed. In the centuries that followed, artists would be commissioned to create large-scale wall murals and frescoed ceilings in sprawling European palaces and in the homes of the aristocracy.

Today, 1stDibs makes it easy for you to celebrate this rich history in your own home. Our collection of paintings includes Art Deco paintings, baroque art and a broad range of other categories. Search by material, period or other attributes to find the right fit — browse an array of 19th century landscape paintings in giltwood frames or abstract oil paintings and portraits made during the 1950s and ‘60s.

An understated contemporary work can complement your space’s color palette without drawing the focus away from the other pivotal design choices you’ve made over the years. Roy Lichtenstein’s Pop art, on the other hand, demands attention with its array of vibrant hues and subjects inspired by popular culture.

Whether you aim to create a gallery in your home or build a single, stunning focal point, you can find what you’re looking for in an extensive inventory of paintings on 1stDibs.
