Andre came to Paris in 1889 as an industrial designer. At the age of 23 he enrolled at the studio of William Bouguereau at the Académie Julian, where he met Ranson, Louis Valtat and the young poet and dramatist Henry Bataille, who at the time was training as a painter. He illustrated L'étang de Berre by Charles Maurras and Les Petites Alliées by Claude Farrère. He produced cartoons for tapestries for the Beauvais factory. In his youth he worked in Paris and Loudun, but later settled in the Midi, where he became curator of the museum in Bagnols-sur-Cèze, building up a major collection of contemporary art, including works by Monet, Renoir, Bonnard, Vuillard, Matisse and Despiau. In 1923, as a friend of Renoir, he compiled his recollections of the painter in a preface to an album of collotypes of his works.
He was initially influenced in his painting by Delacroix, and it was Cézanne's paintings that helped him discover how to give the impression of volume using colour: warm tones for illuminated surfaces and cool colours for shadow. But it was undoubtedly Renoir who had the most profound influence on him, especially as it was Renoir who noticed his paintings in 1894 and introduced him to Paul Durand...

An extensive and brilliantly detailed scene, this fine woodland pastoral landscape highlights the ability of Pieter Gerardus van Os to manipulate light for dramatic and somewhat ecclesiastical effect. There is a certain other-worldly insinuation in the golden light as it pierces the dense cover of the leaves to highlight the shepherd and his flock as the focal point for the painting. Here we find the young boy entirely at peace on the bank surrounded by long golden grasses with his hat and staff tossed aside while watching the action of the small waterfall on the otherwise tranquil stream. His small dog stands beside him while the sheep graze carelessly, each showing total disregard for the two men and their dog hunting in shadows of the woods behind them. Across the bank a pair of unattended billy goats graze on the trees of the deeply shaded forest floor.
There is a harmony and perfect sense of balance in this intricately detailed scene, an effective infusion of the transcendental into a quiet landscape scene. The work is signed lower left in his typical scrawling script "PG [intertwined] Van Os f 1821" and the back of the frame retains an early Christie's label. It is presented in a very fine carved giltwood frame.
PIETER GERARDUS VAN OS
Born in The Hague on October 8th of 1776 into the renowned Van Os family of painters, Pieter would spend his early years studying under his father Jan together with his brother Georgius Johannes Jacobus (Dutch, 1782-1861) in their father's studio. The three men had remarkable careers and would become some of the most influential painters in the Netherlands throughout the first half of the 19th century. Unlike his brother and father, Pieter moved away from still-life paintings and focused his work on rural landscapes of the Dutch countryside. He was self-taught in this pursuit, first as a copyist of the renowned Dutch "Golden Age" painters Karel Dujardin (Dutch, 1626-1678) and Paulus Potter (Dutch, 1625-1654) while also being heavily influenced by the landscape work of Jacob van Ruisdael and the allegorical landscapes of Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem. The following is from Gary Stanley, San Diego, CA
Eugene B. White, a painter, was born in Middle Point, Ohio in 1913. He spent his artistic career documenting the landscapes of Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, and the farmlands of his native Ohio.
He began his career at an early age (in elementary school). His formal training began at the Fort Wayne School of Art in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1935. The war years, and economic pressures put his art on hold until 1947 when he attended the Ringling School of Art and Design under Loran Wilford in Sarasota, Florida. He resided in Sarasota for the remainder of his life.
In addition to his artwork, he was an instructor for periods of time in Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Michigan, and South Dakota. He was a member of the Florida Artists Group, Florida Federation of Art, Sarasota Art Association, and the Art League of Manatee, Florida.
White exhibited widely during his career. Exhibitions included: Sarasota Art Association, Salmagundi Club in New York, Florida Artists Group, Knickerbocker Artists, Columbus Gallery of Fine Art, Detroit Art...

This work is by the Flemish painter Charles-Louis Bisschops (Liège, April 25, 1894 - Rossignol, 1975). The painting has a somewhat impressionistic touch and a beautiful use of color. The blue color of the water contrasts nicely with the shady buildings. The painting is framed in a classic wooden gilded frame. On the back of the painting is an old label stating that the painting was painted in the French port of Ferrier (near Marseille on the Mediterranean). The painting is clearly signed and dated 1937.
