Porter Woodruff, was an illustrator artist and contributor to Vogue Magazine and Home & Garden (including covers for both). He was one of five artists stationed in Paris in 1923 for Vogue. Woodruff spent considerable time in Tunisia, North Africa, residing with his romantic partner, Romanian socialite George Sebastian. Sebastian owned a lavish, coastal property in then-trendy Hammamet, near Tunis on the Mediterranean.
Sebastian fell in love with the simple beauty of the quiet fishing port of Hammamet and was the first of the international set of the times to build his villa there. He started a trend that has never ceased. Frank Lloyd Wright is said to have claimed Dar Sebastian to be ”the most beautiful house I have ever seen”.
American and European intelligentsia and upper-crust were attracted to the area between the wars. The artists Cocteau, Elsa Schiaparelli, Paul Klee, Andre Gide, the Sitwells, and Cecil Beaton enjoyed visiting, partying, and undertaking what someone once described as indulging the opportunity to do 'some rather elaborate sinning'. Other visitors included Art Deco designer Jean-Michel Frank, Wallis Simpson, Somerset Maugham, and Greta Garbo, among others.

About the artist
Louis Nallard (Algiers 1918 – Paris 2016) was a French non-figurative painter of the Nouvelle École de Paris.
Born on June 17, 1918, in Algiers, French Algeria, had a life intertwined with art and creativity. Despite facing early hardships with the loss of his mother to the Spanish flu, Nallard found solace in his ancestral landscapes. Every summer, he returned to the Dombes region, his father’s birthplace, which became a wellspring of inspiration for his artistic endeavors.
At the tender age of sixteen, in 1934, Nallard unveiled his debut exhibition featuring portraits and landscapes, showcasing his skills in watercolors and gouaches. The exhibition took place at the gallery owned by Thomas Rouault, the nephew of the renowned painter.
In 1941, Nallard enrolled at the Beaux-arts in Algiers, where he encountered fellow artists such as Marcel Fiorini and Robert Lavergne. Lavergne later became his introducer at the prestigious Galerie Jeanne Bucher. During this time, Nallard also met Maria Manton...

After the original 17th-century by the famed Flemish painter, David Teniers II (usually referred to as “David Teniers the Younger”, as his father David Teniers the Elder was also an accomplished painter), this fabulous painting depicts a vibrant scene, both in color and theme. Our version, which was painted in the 1700s, is by an unknown, but very talented artist. The painting is surrounded by a giltwood frame with two layers of beading.
Both Teniers were known for developing the “peasant genre” or “tavern scene”, where members of the working class were shown actively celebrating life. The earthy tones of the interior of the inn (brown and beige) are offset by citizens in brightly colored attire consisting of green, red, black, and gray. The scene is divided into two rooms, with seven patrons (mostly men) gathered around a barrel table in front of a very large fireplace. Two of the men are playing cards and there are two tankards visible. The calmness of this group is a drastic difference from the 11 people gathered in the foreground.
