Ludvig Steensen (1882-1958) – Still Life with Game Birds and Mug, Denmark 1928

About the Item

This exquisite still life by Danish artist Ludvig Steensen showcases a masterful composition of two game birds resting on a draped table alongside a rustic copper mug. Painted in 1928 in Ry, Denmark, this piece embodies the rich tradition of European still life painting with its refined realism and moody, subdued color palette. Steensen’s brushwork and use of light create a striking contrast between the soft textures of the birds’ feathers and the crisp folds of the tablecloth, capturing a moment of quiet contemplation. The warm, earthy tones and intricate details lend the painting a timeless and sophisticated appeal, making it a perfect addition to any collection of classic or hunting-inspired art. The painting is presented in its original gilded frame, which enhances its historical charm.

A peaceful rendering and reminiscent of Morandi's solitary still life paintings. Prats' stippling effect with the brush or palette knife has created a beautifully tactile and textured painting. Light and dark contrast of the violet cylinder next to the curvaceous jug. A wonderful piece. the framing treatment consists of a simple flat black wood profile molding. The piece is in good overall condition with minor losses around the corners and edges of the work. No other major paint losses. No visible crazing, water damage or restorations. Some scuffs, dings and losses to the black frame. Wear consistent with age. Approximate overall dimensions with frame are 1.5" deep x 16" wide x 24.75" high.
