About the Item
Lovely and ethereal, reminiscent of the pale, ideal compositions of Puvis de Chavannes in France and America, this utopian vista depicts a series of figures gathering fruit and grain, all in formal classical poses like an ancient, early Renaissance painting. Intermixed with the figures are birds, rabbits and deer, a kind of modern day Peaceable Kingdom. The painter, John Ramsey Conner, studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and won a medal for his work exhibited at the Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1926. His works are in the collections of the Academy and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. This painting was owned by Walter E. Baum, the renowned Bucks County impressionist. The painting is oil on canvas.

John Ramsey Conner
John Ramsey Conner was born in 1869. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and won a medal for his work exhibited at the Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1926. His works are in the collections of the Academy and the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at GW in Washington, D.C. Conner died in 1952.
