"Laying Track", WPA-Era Woodblock Print with Nude Male Workers by Ruegg

About the Item

This remarkable -- perhaps unique -- woodblock print depicts a group of five nude male workers laying railroad track, their strong, muscled figures interlaced as they strive to move and set the ties. The figures almost seem to be carrying out an intricate choreography, which would make sense since the artist -- Verna (or Verena) Ruegg -- spent much of her career sketching ballet dancers and creating prints with dancing figures. Ruegg attended the Chouinard Art Institute and the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles and was a member of the California Art Club association. She suffered tuberculosis as a child, and later as part of her therapy she created ceramic pieces at Arequipa pottery near San Francisco. Her pieces were included in the art competition at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and later she worked for Walt Disney Studios. The piece is signed in pencil in the lower lefthand corner. Dimensions include matte and frame; the visible print is 17 inches high by 18 inches wide.

Clearly demonstrating his love for the culture and sensuality of his adopted Hawaii, and brilliantly executed, Robert Lee Eskridge's "Stone Fishing" is a landmark in Art Deco printmaking. "Asleep in the Hay, " Art Deco Print with Half-Nude Male by Lynd Ward, 1932
By Lynd Ward
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Famed for his woodcut book illustrations in the Art Deco era, Lynd Ward produced a series of dramatic images that reminded the reader of film noirs of the era, with spotlit figures in dark settings that seemed to presage flight, fear, hope and death. Unsigned plates from the books he illustrated are not uncommon, but signed prints such as this are rare. This image was an illustration for "Wild Pilgrimage" by Ward, published by Harrison Smith...

Traditional Japanese Woodblock Print by Nishijima Katsuyuki
Located in Weesp, NL
Nishijima Katsuyuki (西島 勝之) is a contemporary Japanese artist known for his woodblock prints, which often depict traditional Japanese architecture and landscapes. Born in 1945 in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, Nishijima studied at the Kyoto Prefecture Art School and began his career as a painter before transitioning to woodblock printing. His works are celebrated for their detailed and vibrant representation of the Japanese countryside and urban scenes. Nishijima's prints are recognized for their use of bold colors and intricate details. He employs traditional woodblock printing techniques, which involve carving the image into woodblocks, inking the blocks, and then pressing them onto paper. Each color in the print requires a separate block and precise alignment, or registration, to create the final image. The print's title is "Bunraku" and is one of Nishijima's works that showcase traditional Japanese buildings and scenes. The print features a detailed depiction of a traditional Japanese storefront with a noren...
