About the Item

A 1970s color intaglio print by the Argentine-American artist Mauricio Lasansky (1914-2012). Titled Kaddish (8), this abstract work is from the artist's Kaddish series. Displayed in a metal frame without a mat, the print is signed and titled to the lower right and numbered 18/70 to the lower left. During the 1960s, Lasansky saw a documentary about atrocities committed by Nazis during World War II, which caused him such anger that he created a series of drawings titled Nazi Drawings. In the 1970s, Lasansky drew inspiration from his Nazi Drawings to create his Kaddish series. In the series, he depicted both perpetrators of the Holocaust and Holocaust victims. In this particular print from his Kaddish series, Lasansky portrays a prisoner in a striped uniform with haunted red eyes and barbed wire-like design above his head. A white dove with olive branch flies above the figure and a row numbers, the row of numbers being a reference to the prisoner number those interred at concentration camps were tattooed with. Born in Buenos Aires, Lasansky started making prints as a child with his father who was a professional printmaker and engraver. As a teenager, he received an honorable mention and later a prize from exhibiting sculptures of his in the Mutulidad Fine Arts Exhibition. In 1933, Lasansky attended the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires and in 1936, he became the director of the Free Fine Arts School in Villa María, Argentine. In 1943, Lasansky was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, the first of five, and moved to New York City A year later, he worked at Atelier 17, Stanley William Hayter's printmaking group. Deciding to stay in the United States, Lasansky began teaching at the University of Iowa as a guest lecturer and eventually became a full professor. He started the University's school of printmaking and in the 1960s, Time magazine named him "the nation's most influential printmaker."

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. Scratches to the metal frame and plexiglass. Even toning to the paper. Some natural creases in the paper. The top of the paper has been cut diagonally and is visible through the framing.
