19thc Etruscan Revival 14k Gold Brooch Set With Carved Coral and Silver Colored Seed Pearls. The pillow shaped concave sided brooch has an open-work gold wire border, the top with granulation and gold wire with filigree engraving on the gold wire in a scrolling design. The border is set with four, floral carved coral blossoms and the four corners are mounted with silver colored natural seed pearls and the sides with tapered free moving bullet shaped gold drops. Centering the brooch is a carved coral, sleeping putti. The warm burnished glow in the deep yellow gold was the result of a technique called bloomed gold. A high carat gold wash (22-24 kt), in this case over 14 kt gold. Bloomed gold is alloy deletion leaving a pure gold surface on a piece. This is a different look than gold plating as it leaves a nice frosted effect. These techniques were developed by the Etruscan's. This impressive antique pearl brooch has been crafted in 15k yellow gold in the form of a hornet.
Two of the hornet's wings are ornamented with elongated dutch cut diamonds.
The head and thorax are also ornamented with round dutch cut diamonds.
The head of this fine brooch is also embellished with two cabochon cut garnet eyes.
Completing the hornet is a baroque pearl abdomen, two realistically decorated wings and six realistically modelled legs.
This piece of antique jewelry secures to the reverse with a hallmarked hinged pin and hook fastening.
