This impressive necklace is a vintage creation dating to 1980s and is emblematic of the bold French high-jewelry glamour of that era. A large aquamarine of approximately 24 carats is the highlight of the necklace center pendant and features an ever-elegant emerald-step-cut. The aquamarine displays a rich and lively blue color that lights up beautifully as the necklace is worn. It is also characterized by fine clarity. The vivid aquamarine gemstone floats on top of oval 18 karat yellow gold base which is masterfully inlaid with black onyx and encrusted with sparkling fine white diamonds. The rest of the necklace is composed of elegant oval links, surface of which is accentuated with finely crafted ridges, and diamond set short links in between them. Altogether, the diamonds total approximately 5 carats. The juxtaposition of vivid blue aquamarine against elegant black onyx and a sumptuous frame of glittering diamonds in the pendant, along with the finely crafted necklace links, all make for an incredibly sophisticated and chic statement jewel. The necklace is in excellent condition and bears French hallmarks of the period including a maker’s mark for Péry & Fils which was one of the main jewelry makers for Mauboussin Paris. Also available under separate listings are a bracelet and earrings from the same jewelry suite.

This gorgeous piece of art has been crafted in solid yellow gold of 18 karats, with textured surfaces finishes and embellished with accents of red, orange and white glass enamel. It is fitted at the reverse with a hinged double pins bars to wear as a brooch or a pendant.

Carlos Páez Vilaró
He was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1923. He was a Uruguayan abstract artist, painter, potter, sculptor, muralist, writer, composer and constructor. He took up drawing in 1939 and relocated to Buenos Aires, where he worked as a printing apprentice in the industrial Barracas section of the Argentine capital. Returning to Montevideo in the late 1940s, he developed an interest in Afro-Uruguayan culture. Settling in Montevideo's primarily black neighborhood of "Mediomundo" ("Half-World"), he studied the Candombé and Comparsa dances characteristic to the culture. He composed numerous musical pieces in the two genres and conducted an orchestra. His group's congas and bongos were decorated with their leader's own thematic drawings, as well. His interest in the culture later led him to Brazil, home to the western hemisphere's largest population of African descent. Páez Vilaró was invited to exhibit some of this work by the Director of the Modern Art Museum of Paris, Jean Cassou, in 1956.
