About the Item

A rare and seldom seen authentic silver "drachm" coin from the ancient Greek colony of Abdera (on the shores of Northern Greece) that was struck between 473-449 BC depicts a griffin with foreleg raised. Abdera was a flourishing seaport in ancient times, and chose the griffin as the totem symbol of their city. The griffin was a mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, often thought to be the guardian of treasures. This coin is an extremely early issue, and as such, has only a rough 4 part stamp on the reverse side. This coin is mounted carefully within a Steven Battelle designed handmade 18K "double jawan" handmade granulated gold setting with a single 1.8 mm VS1 diamond accent below. This unique pendant (note size comparison with dime) comes with a laminated lifetime coin certificate of authenticity. The 20 inch 18K handmade hammered chain shown is not included, but can be ordered additionally. We discount our chains 20% when ordered with a pendant. An unusual ancient rarity!

Ancient Roman Republic 1st Century BC Griffin Coin Diamond 18K Gold Pendant
By Steven Battelle
Located in Soquel, CA
An interesting, authentic, silver denarius coin from the period of the Roman Republic in 79 BCE, featuring a griffin leaping, is set in a Steven Battelle ancient inspired handmade matte-finish textured bezel mount with 1.8mm VS1 diamond accent. The denarius was approximately the daily wage of a soldier in ancient Rome. This particular type of coin is known as a denarius serratus. The ragged edges of the coin are intentional (all coins of this type have them) to show that coin is pure silver. The minting of the coins was an annual office shared by 3 men, and they often placed the family name on the coins. This coin was minted by moneyer L. Papius, who was probably from Lanuvium, which was about 19 miles outside of Rome. The reverse side of the coin displays...
