Cameo Ring Carved Lava, circa 1940s
This is a ring that honors a hero. This is a ring you give to a hero. I studied art history at the University of Massachusetts for a brief time at a young age, but the face of Pliny was seared into my neurons and I do believe the gentleman so expertly rendered in white lava is none other than the Roman philosopher, author and naturalist himself. Which makes a great deal of sense because Pliny the Elder died while attempting a heroic rescue of epic and historical proportions during the chaos that ensued following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny's nephew wrote, "(W)hat began as a scientific expedition, now became a noble and selfless mission of rescue. He ordered galleys to put to sea, and went on board, planning not only to save Rectina, but also to bring aid to the numerous towns of that beautiful coast. Hurrying, then, to the very place that others fled, he set his course directly for the center of danger. And he did this with such calm and presence of mind that he actually dictated his observations on the dreadful spectacle to an amanuensis en route." Is there a hero in your life worthy of such a ring? Were you raised by a single mother who taught you how awesomely strong, fearless, powerful and brave women? Was your father the one who told you to follow your dreams? Who whispered, "You can do anything you set your mind to," just as you were drifting off to sleep? Or perhaps you have a friend who saved you from what would have been a disastrous relationship. Real-life heroes walk among us. They are everywhere, in fact. They run into burning buildings; they put themselves in the line of fire. And they deserve to be recognized and honored. This one-of-a-kind ring with classical lines and proportions showcases a noble intaglio expertly carved in raised relief from lava stone and mounted into a tailored frame, held securely in place by four elegant squared prongs. The ring features decidedly Romanesque design elements: the rope-loop on each shoulder suggestive of a toga tie; the architecture of the metalwork and how it is simply arch after arch -a form invented by the Etruscans -the *original* "ancient Romans." The craftsmanship reminds me of Italian rings that were constructed in the early 1940s. The slight coppery rose gold is very retro as well. This is a sturdy, well-made and handsome ring that is completely unisex. Currently a size 7.75, it could be resized by your quality jeweler. It is unmarked but tests as 14K gold. Even if the hero in your life doesn't wear this ring on their finger, placing on their desk (where I keep many favorite jewels) will be a constant reminder of your admiration and gratitude. This is a design masterpiece that celebrates one of humanities' most enduring heroes. Perhaps it's just the perfect treasure for you to celebrate the hero in your life.
