Persian Rings

This incredible piece dates to the 11th century Seljuk dynasty. The carnelian intaglio is set within a typical Seljuk tapered rectagonal bezel with a four-pronged gold setting soldered to the outside of the bezel. Applied and pierced high carat gold arabesque designs are placed at the bottom of each prong which also reinforce the joints. Further applied gold Seljuk ornamentation decorates the band, and towards the back of the chamfered shank a slight vestigial sprued bottom (back-knob) is visible from the casting. The silver mount itself is also ornately chased and nielloed with linear patterns. Unlike most existing examples which are cast in gold, this is a very scarce surviving example in silver. The carnelian intaglio seal is of rectangular form with a barrel-shaped top, flat base and bevelled sides. This shape was used in the 8th-10th century. The seal is engraved with angular Kufic script with forked terminals which dates the seal to the 9th-12th centuries (Porter, 2011).
