About the Item

A fine antique, early 18th century English silver milk jug. In Britannia silver. Made by Nathaniel Gulliver. The jug having punch-work decoration of repeating trefoil leaves to the top and alternating acorns & starbursts above a gadrooned belly. Engraved with an armorial crest to the front incorporating a raised sword and double Xs. Interestingly, we believe that taking milk or cream in tea became popular in the 1720s in England. As such, this milk jug appears to be a quite early example of the form. Marked to the base for Nathaniel Gulliver / London / 1723 / and the .958 (Britannia) standard. Simply a wonderful, early piece of English silver! Date: 1723 Overall Condition: It is in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition with some fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Maker: Nathaniel Gulliver Marks: Marked to the base for Nathaniel Gulliver / London / 1723 / .958 (Britannia) standard. Measurements: Height: ca. 5 in. Width: ca. 6 1/8 in. Depth: ca. 4 3/8 in.
