Rare 1947 Palladium / Diamond Dial 19 Jewel
Located in Raleigh, NC
Welcome to Vintage Watch Corner, where one can find the most unusual timepieces that are sure to have stories that will never be revealed. Everyone looks at your watch and it represents who you are, your values and your personal style. Jewelry isn’t really my thing, but I’ve always got my eye on people’s watches. It is a quiet personal statement. My apologies for the long listing. I am laying the foundation for you to understand what I have listed. This is a “Palladium Cased – Diamond Dial” Hamilton from 1947. This is not your ordinary watch. Let me make one thing clear. Hamilton never sanctioned the reacasing of Hamilton movements with diamond dials and different alloys. It was done anyway. There are many varieties of Hamilton Diamond Dials with solid rose gold, solid yellow gold , solid platinum and of coursed solid palladium. You can find many platinum and gold examples, yet it is more difficult to find a Palladium example. Look at this offering very closely. If you are discerning and are looking for a distinctive watch that can be passed down generations, look no further. A Rare Palladium Hidden Lug Hamilton, with a diamond dial that is matched with Hamilton’s finest quality wristwatch movement, it doesn’t get better than that! We call that “Watch” Nirvana. This watch has lived 76 beautiful years and is looking for another place to call home! This watch is outfitted with one of Hamilton’s finest quality movements, the venerable 982M (Medallion), read below for a more detailed explanation. It is a mechanical masterpiece The 982M is virtually identical to the 982 movement, except it is finished to a higher degree of tolerances and decoration. On the back of the 982M you can see the gold "medallion" representing that this is a special movement. Considering most people would never look at the back of the watch movement - the fact that Hamilton put so much attention to detail in the fine finish work of their movements is a testament to their premier quality. Under the dial is a 19 jewel 982 Medallion movement. The 982M was introduced in 1940 and replaced the high grade 982 movement in solid gold models. The 982 and 982M are virtually identical other than the additional damascening and gold (orangish) highlights on the movement back. Hamilton touted the 982M as the height of accuracy noting its cap jewels on the escape wheel and Elinvar (“Elasticity Invariable”) hairspring. Additionally, Hamilton promoted the 982M movement as having increased durability, which predated the incabloc shock absorbing mechanism from Switzerland. Introduced in 1941 and concluded in 1951 Year 1947 Grade 982M Size 14/0 Jewels 19 Type Hunting Settings Pendant Production From 1940 Quantity 110131 Remarks Gold Medallion Introduced in 1941 and concluded in 1951 Did you know that Palladium is more rare than Platinum. As of this listing Platinum is $941.00 and Palladium is $1094…. Platinum and Palladium Differences The main differences between Platinum vs Palladium are: Platinum is its own metal, whereas palladium is part of the platinum group metals Palladium is more rare, whereas platinum engagement rings are easier to find Platinum is a heavier metal, whereas palladium rings are more lightweight Palladium jewelry often used as men’s wedding band, whereas platinum rings are often used as engagement rings All jewelers will work on platinum jewelry, but not every jeweler will work on palladium, they don’t have the expereince Palladium is more rare than platinum. But like platinum, it’s not normally found in its own deposits but in other ore bearing mines. Most palladium comes from nickel-copper mines. It was discovered by William Hyde Wollastonin 1803. The word "palladium" is derived from the name Pallos. Pallos was an asteroid discovered around this time. Most palladium is mined in Russia but it’s also found in the United States, Finland, Australia, Canada, and Zimbabwe. Because of its rarity, palladium rings aren’t easy to find. They’re less common than platinum rings. Even though palladium jewelry has been around for quite some time, people didn’t really start picking up on it within the last 20 years. My speculation is that it's largely due to the internet. Besides jewelry, palladium is used in metal instruments like dental tools and electronics. Hamilton History Founded in Lancaster, PA in 1892, the Hamilton Watch Company has produced quality timepieces for over a century. Over the years, the company’s craftsmanship has never wavered, and they continue to present new ideas of what a wristwatch can be. Offering sharp, sophisticated designs and accurate timekeeping, each Hamilton watch boasts a classic look combined with cutting-edge technology. History Of Hamilton Watches Founded in Lancaster, PA in 1892, the Hamilton Watch Company has produced quality timepieces for over a century. Offering sharp, sophisticated designs and accurate timekeeping, each Hamilton watch boasts a classic look combined with cutting-edge technology. Rooted in Military History In the early 1900s, Hamilton was named the official wristwatch supplier for the American Armed Forces. The watches were worn on the wrists of servicemen in both World Wars and all other military operations that the US entered over the last hundred years. 928: After the Yankees won the world series, the Hamilton Watch Company announced the Yankee watch, establishing it as a pioneer in watch design. The brand helped America keep up with the energy of a new lifestyle. Cutting-edge Hamilton designs, including the Yankee and the Piping Rock, symbolized the independent spirit of the day. 1930: Hamilton watches continued to embody the soaring spirit of the ‘30s, as the world turned its attention to the skies with the start of commercial aviation. Soon after, Hamilton was named the official timepiece of popular industry leaders, including Eastern, TWC and Northwest. World War II 1940: During WWII, Hamilton stopped producing watches for consumers and began developing new timepieces exclusively for military purposes. Nearly one million Hamilton military...

Retro Horovitz Alexandrie Turquoise Ring Ruby Diamond 18k Gold Vintage Jewelry
Located in Beverly Hills, CA
An exuberant turquoise ring with diamond and ruby; signed by Horovitz. The head of the ring is crafted of turquoise cabochons mounted in a spiral pattern. The center of the spiral is a “crater” encrusted with Old European cut diamond, single cut diamonds and framed with tiny gold beads. There is a bigger diamond staged to the right side of the “crater”. Round cut rubies are bezel set between the turquoise cabochons, repeating the spiral pattern. The shank of the ring is accented with rubies as well. This vintage turquoise ring is a spectacular conversational piece. Despite carrying a big diamond, the ring is fun and edgy. Wear it as a cocktail ring or as your daily piece that reflects your personality. Made of 18 karat yellow and white gold, turquoise, diamonds and rubies, the Retro ring features an approximately 1.05-carat transitional Old European cut diamond (H color, SI1 clarity) accented with single cut diamonds (G-I color, VS clarity). Diamond total weight is approximately 5.74 carats. The diamonds are set in white gold which accentuates their whiteness. The rubies are round faceted, total weight approximately 2.39 carats. The vintage ring is size 6.25; can be re-sized. The ring top is 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) in diameter. Weight 16.7 grams. The Retro ring is stamped with Horovitz Alexandrie maker's marks. About Horovitz Jewelry: The history of Horovitz jewelry is rooted in the beginning of the 20th century in Alexandria. At that time, one of the leading jewelry dealers in Egypt was Wolf Horovitz (1883-1959). Originally Romanian, Horovitz based his business Bijouterie Horovitz in Alexandria. His élite jewelry clientele included the Royal courts of King Fouad I and King Farouk I. Horovitz earned his reputation as a prominent jeweler by dealing with the most important houses in Paris. His son, Theodore Horovitz, started his career as a jewelry maker at the age of 17. He was working in his father’s shop. Eventually Theodore opened his own atelier and ended up creating jewels for Alexandria’s nobility and making a crown for the Queen. After the overthrow of King Farouk in 1952, Horovitz moved to Geneva. There he became one of the finest jewelers in the city: the colleagues called him “a legendary godfather to Geneva’s gem-dealing community”. Today Horovitz jewelry is a rare find and the House pieces are sought-after by the jewelry experts. About Turquoise Jewelry: Turquoise, with its vibrant blue-green hues, has been a cherished gemstone for centuries. In vintage jewelry design, turquoise holds a special place. The name “turquoise” came from the French pierre tourques and translates as a “Turkish stone.” The mineral was first transported to the west through Turkey from mines in the historical Khorasan province of Iran (Persia) and Afghanistan. Pre-Columbian Native Americans mined the stone throughout nowadays. In all these cultures turquoise was considered as a protective stone for warriors and symbolized the connection to heaven. In the 17th century wearing turquoise jewelry was a must for a well-dressed gentleman. The stone was popular to the point when all the emeralds in the crown that Napoleon I gave Empress Marie Louise were replaced with Persian turquoise cabochons. Today Persian turquoise is beloved by jewelry aficionados for its warm, calming color. It may vary from sky-blue to green. As to the dark veins, it depends on your preferences and a certain piece. Some jewelry collectors prefer turquoise with a web pattern of matrix as it adds character to a piece. The versatility of turquoise allows it to be used into various designs. Smooth cabochon cut turquoise is a common choice for vintage jewelry. Beadwork is also a popular technique that showcases turquoise's unique color. Turquoise is often associated with the American Southwest, where Native American artisans have been using the stone for centuries. Vintage turquoise jewelry...

Antique diamond rings, diamond tiaras and dazzling vintage diamond earrings are on the wish lists of every lover of fine jewelry. And diamonds and diamond jewelry are primarily associated with storybook engagements and red-carpet grand entrances — indeed, this ultra-cherished gemstone has a dramatic history on its hands.

From “A Diamond Is Forever” to “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” pop culture has ingrained in our minds that diamonds are the most desired, the most lasting and the most valuable gemstone. But what makes the diamond so special? Each stone — whether it’s rubies, sapphires or another stone — is unique and important in its own right. April babies might claim diamonds for themselves, but just about everyone wants this kind of sparkle in their lives!

There are several factors that set diamonds apart from other stones, and these points are important to our gem education.

Diamonds are minerals. They are made up of almost entirely of carbon (carbon comprises 99.95 percent; the remainder consists of various trace elements). Diamonds are the hardest gemstones, ranking number 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Even its name, diamond, is rooted in the Greek adamas, or unconquerable. The only object that can scratch a diamond is another diamond. Diamonds are formed deep within the earth at very high temperatures (1,652–2,372 degrees Fahrenheit at depths between 90 and 120 miles beneath the earth’s surface) and are carried up by volcanic activity. Diamonds are quite rare, according to the Gemological Institute of America, and only 30 percent of all the diamonds mined in the world are gem quality.

In the 1950s, the Gemological Institute of America developed the 4Cs grading system to classify diamonds: clarity, color, cut and carat weight. Not all diamonds are created equal (there are diamonds, and then there are diamonds). The value of the diamond depends on the clarity (flawless diamonds are very rare but a diamond's value decreases if there are many blemishes or inclusions), color (the less color the higher the grade), cut (how the diamond’s facets catch the light, certain cuts of diamonds show off the stone better than others) and carat weight (the bigger, the better).

When you start shopping for a diamond engagement ring, always prioritize the cut, which plays the largest role in the diamond's beauty (taking the time to clean your diamond ring at least every six months or so plays a role in maintaining said beauty).
