ART DECO STYLE

Fascination with the Jazz Age is endless, and even today jewelry designers continue to be inspired by authentic Art Deco jewelry and watches.

The Art Deco period, encompassing the 1920s and ’30s, ushered in a very distinct look in the design of jewelry. There were many influences on the jewelry of the era that actually began to take shape prior to the 1920s. In 1909, Serge Diaghilev brought the Ballet Russes to Paris, and women went wild for the company’s exotic and vibrant costumes It’s no wonder, then, that jade, lapis lazuli, coral, turquoise and other bright gemstones became all the rage. There already existed a fascination with the East, particularly China and Japan, and motifs consisting of fans and masks started to show up in Art Deco jewelry.

However, the event that had the greatest influence on Deco was the excavation of the tomb of King Tut in 1922. When the world saw what was hidden in Tut’s burial chamber, it sent just about everyone into a frenzy. Pierre Cartier wrote in 1923 that “the discovery of the tomb will bring some sweeping changes in fashion jewelry.” And he couldn’t have been more right. “Egyptomania” left an indelible mark on all of the major jewelry houses, from Cartier to Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron and Georges Fouquet. (Cartier created some of the most iconic jewelry designs that defined this era.)

While a lot of Art Deco jewelry was black and white — the black coming from the use of onyx or black enamel and the white from rock crystal and diamonds — there is plenty of color in jewelry of the era. A perfect accent to diamonds in platinum settings were blue sapphires, emeralds and rubies, and these stones were also used in combination with each other.

Many designers employed coral, jade and lapis lazuli, too. In fact, some of the most important avant-garde jewelers of the period, like Jean Després and Jean Fouquet (son of Georges), would combine white gold with ebony and malachite for a jolt of color.

A lot of the jewelry produced during this time nodded to current fashion trends, and women often accessorized their accessories. The cloche hat was often accented with geometric diamond brooches or double-clip brooches. Backless evening dresses looked fabulous with sautoir necklaces, and long pearl necklaces that ended with tassels, popular during the Edwardian period, were favored by women everywhere, including Coco Chanel.

LIFETIME SERVICE COMMITMENT This unique model by H This is a great looking and dependable watch by this legendary American House from Lancaster Pennsylvania. This watch is offered with what appears to be an original period strap and an original Hamilton buckle. While the strap is to fragile to be practical it does indicate that this watch is in nearly new condition. Hamilton was devoted to excellence from their most modest watch to their finest. For example, Hamilton Dials were made in all Sterling Silver with Solid Gold 18Kt. Applied Numerals. No American house did this on all their watches. Only the finest Swiss houses had this level of quality. This watch will keep dependable time for the next 200 years if you give it a service every so often. Hamilton History The wrong train, on the wrong track, at the wrong time at the end of the 19th century frequently resulted in disastrous train wrecks. In response to the critical need for accuracy on the nation’s railroads, laws were passed in 1891 establishing set standards of accuracy. All engineers and railroad workers were required to purchase and maintain their watches to keep accurate time based on set standards, about 30 seconds per week was the tolerance. This was the inspiration for The Hamilton Watch Company which was founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The company was started by a group of investors who were looking to create a high-quality, American-made watch. Hamilton quickly became a leading manufacturer of pocket watches, and by the early 1900s, the company was supplying watches to the US military. In 1917, Hamilton introduced its first wristwatch for service men entering the first World War. The wristwatch quickly became popular with both soldiers and civilians recognizing how practical they were. Hamilton continued to grow throughout the 1920s and 1930s, and by the 1940s, the company was one of the largest watchmakers in the world. Hamilton had exceptional engineers and designers and their watches were elegantly styled as well as dependable. As a watchmaker myself I consider Hamilton to be one of the worlds “best” watches. It was mass produced perfection. Even today, you can take 100 old Hamilton’s of the same model apart and shake them up in a bag and reassemble 100 watches that will work perfectly with almost no adjustment. This is an achievement. In the early 1930’s our family store in Los Angeles was a “Hamilton” Store. Even during the depression though Hamilton did not allow you to discount the price to sell a watch. Also, in the neighborhood was another Hamilton store and one day the owner sent in a “shill” to buy a Hamilton from us, someone gave them a slight discount. Well, that was all it took for Hamilton to “pull the line” from us. In those days the local jewelry supply houses sold you the watches and they were all told not to sell to us. We simply contacted Gruen, and they were very excited to have a new account...

Rare 1947 Palladium / Diamond Dial 19 Jewel
Located in Raleigh, NC
Welcome to Vintage Watch Corner, where one can find the most unusual timepieces that are sure to have stories that will never be revealed. Everyone looks at your watch and it represents who you are, your values and your personal style. Jewelry isn’t really my thing, but I’ve always got my eye on people’s watches. It is a quiet personal statement. My apologies for the long listing. I am laying the foundation for you to understand what I have listed. This is a “Palladium Cased – Diamond Dial” Hamilton from 1947. This is not your ordinary watch. Let me make one thing clear. Hamilton never sanctioned the reacasing of Hamilton movements with diamond dials and different alloys. It was done anyway. There are many varieties of Hamilton Diamond Dials with solid rose gold, solid yellow gold , solid platinum and of coursed solid palladium. You can find many platinum and gold examples, yet it is more difficult to find a Palladium example. Look at this offering very closely. If you are discerning and are looking for a distinctive watch that can be passed down generations, look no further. A Rare Palladium Hidden Lug Hamilton, with a diamond dial that is matched with Hamilton’s finest quality wristwatch movement, it doesn’t get better than that! We call that “Watch” Nirvana. This watch has lived 76 beautiful years and is looking for another place to call home! This watch is outfitted with one of Hamilton’s finest quality movements, the venerable 982M (Medallion), read below for a more detailed explanation. It is a mechanical masterpiece The 982M is virtually identical to the 982 movement, except it is finished to a higher degree of tolerances and decoration. On the back of the 982M you can see the gold "medallion" representing that this is a special movement. Considering most people would never look at the back of the watch movement - the fact that Hamilton put so much attention to detail in the fine finish work of their movements is a testament to their premier quality. Under the dial is a 19 jewel 982 Medallion movement. The 982M was introduced in 1940 and replaced the high grade 982 movement in solid gold models. The 982 and 982M are virtually identical other than the additional damascening and gold (orangish) highlights on the movement back. Hamilton touted the 982M as the height of accuracy noting its cap jewels on the escape wheel and Elinvar (“Elasticity Invariable”) hairspring. Additionally, Hamilton promoted the 982M movement as having increased durability, which predated the incabloc shock absorbing mechanism from Switzerland. Introduced in 1941 and concluded in 1951 Year 1947 Grade 982M Size 14/0 Jewels 19 Type Hunting Settings Pendant Production From 1940 Quantity 110131 Remarks Gold Medallion Introduced in 1941 and concluded in 1951 Did you know that Palladium is more rare than Platinum. As of this listing Platinum is $941.00 and Palladium is $1094…. Platinum and Palladium Differences The main differences between Platinum vs Palladium are: Platinum is its own metal, whereas palladium is part of the platinum group metals Palladium is more rare, whereas platinum engagement rings are easier to find Platinum is a heavier metal, whereas palladium rings are more lightweight Palladium jewelry often used as men’s wedding band, whereas platinum rings are often used as engagement rings All jewelers will work on platinum jewelry, but not every jeweler will work on palladium, they don’t have the expereince Palladium is more rare than platinum. But like platinum, it’s not normally found in its own deposits but in other ore bearing mines. Most palladium comes from nickel-copper mines. It was discovered by William Hyde Wollastonin 1803. The word "palladium" is derived from the name Pallos. Pallos was an asteroid discovered around this time. Most palladium is mined in Russia but it’s also found in the United States, Finland, Australia, Canada, and Zimbabwe. Because of its rarity, palladium rings aren’t easy to find. They’re less common than platinum rings. Even though palladium jewelry has been around for quite some time, people didn’t really start picking up on it within the last 20 years. My speculation is that it's largely due to the internet. Besides jewelry, palladium is used in metal instruments like dental tools and electronics.
