Presented is a 1887 printing of Izaak Walton and Charles Cotton’s famous treatise on fishing, The Complete Angler, or the Contemplative Man’s Recreation. Published by Chatto and Windus in London, this beautifully bound volume was the fourth edition to be edited by Sir Harris Nicolas. The book is presented in modern full brown Moroccan leather boards with gilt titles and illustrated throughout with wood engravings from 27 of the most prominent artists of the time.
The Complete Angler was first published in 1653 by Richard Marriot of St Dunstan-in-the-West out of London, UK. Izaak Walton continued to add to the original book for a quarter of a century. A significantly enlarged edition appeared in 1655, and the last edition supervised by Walton, published in 1676, included additional fly-fishing material written by his friend Charles Cotton. The 1676 edition has been among the most often reprinted books in English literature.

Washington after their defeat at Yorktown Virginia October 1781.” The dedication continues in the bottom margin, “To the defenders of American independence, this print is most respectfully inscribed by their fellow citizen, Jn. Fcis. Renault, assistant secretary to the Count de Grass, and engineer to the French Army, at the siege of York.” The engraving is after a painting by John Francis Renault, and engraved by Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co. and William Allen, in Philadelphia in January of 1819.
This historic print depicts the surrender of the British forces after the Battle of Yorktown. The print shows Lord Cornwallis offering his sword to the Duke de Lauzun, who defers the weapon to General Washington. British officers stand with Cornwallis on the right and French and American officers are shown at center and left. The immediate background is filled with an elaborate allegorical scene. Behind the British troops is a female representation of “Discord,” wearing a billowing robes and liberty cap and floating on storm clouds, as she sends lightning bolts to up-end the British people and a chariot below her. Behind the American and French officers, “Prosperity” stands next to an overflowing cornucopia, with “Justice”, an infant child with a paddle inscribed “American Constitution,” representing the helm of statehood. This is a 1835 map of “The United States from the Latest Authorities” by Ezra Strong. A hand-colored engraved wall map of the eastern half of the United States, this map has a large inset of the "Oregon District" and several engraved city views and two portraits.
The primary map extends to Mexico Texas and the Missouri Territory, showing the course of the Missouri River to Ft. Mandan and Old Ft. Mandan, and noting many forts along the river. The territories to the east of Missouri Territory are separately delineated as Sioux District and Huron District. The western details of the map are very good for a map of this time period, with many Native American settlements, villages, forts and other details noted.
The map is bordered with vignettes of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Hartford, Cincinnati, and Baltimore. Each vignette notes the date settled, primary settler, and the population as of 1830. Two portraits of LaFayette and George Washington are presented in full length with related biographical information.

Antique Necklace hand made in 18K yellow gold with a serpent and heart motif, the heart and serpent have fancy cut red garnets and the serpent's eyes and nose are rose cut diamonds.
This necklace is in fine condition, 16.25 inches long with the hanging section of the serpent and heart is 1.5 inches. The weight is 30.6 grams. Please note: Our model in the photographs has a medium to large necklace size and hand size. This antique necklace bears no marks. We have performed an acid test to confirm its gold purity as being 18K (.750).
When in the late 1830's Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (in Germany) proposed to his cousin Queen Victoria with a ring in the form of a snake, he soon became Prince Consort and Victorians soon came to consider serpent motif jewels to be symbols of eternal love.
And, when Albert died in 1860, Victoria, as if to demonstrate her eternal commitment, entered a period of mourning and formal remembrance that lasted for the rest of her life, thereby publicly showing her love decades after Albert's death.
