Makes a superb gift! Published on the occasion of these exhibitions: The Metropolitan Museum of Art(04/11/11-08/28/11) San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (10/15/11-01/16/12) The Menil Collection (03/02/12–06/10/12) Book information: Published by Yale University Press, CO, and The Menil Collection, Houston. English; Hardback; 232 pages with 160 quadratone illustrations Publisher's blurb: As the focal point of numerous high-profile exhibitions, the sculpture of Richard Serra (b. 1939) has drawn international acclaim. Yet even those who have marveled at Serra's intellectually rigorous and large works of sculpture may not be familiar with his equally intriguing drawings. This handsome book brings together for the first time Serra's drawn work, considering the artist's investigation of medium as an activity both independent from and linked to his pioneering sculptural practice. First working in ink, charcoal, and lithographic crayon on paper, Serra originally used drawing as a means to explore form and perceptual relations between his sculpture and the viewer. Over time, his drawings underwent significant shifts in concept, materials, and scale and became fully realized and autonomous works of art. The grand, bold forms he created with black paintstick in his monumental Installation Drawings were designed to disrupt and complement existent spaces and eventually began to occupy entire rooms. In the late 1980s, Serra explored the tension of weight and gravity through layering, and his most recent work experiments with surface effects, using mesh screens as intermediaries between the gesture and the transfer of pigment to paper. More about Richard Serra: Obsession is what it comes down to. It is difficult to think without obsession, and it is impossible to create something without a foundation that is rigorous, incontrovertible, and, in fact, to some degree repetitive. Repetition is the ritual of obsession. Repetition is a way to jumpstart the indecision of beginning. To persevere and to begin over and over again is to continue the obsession with work. Work comes out of work. In order to work you must already be working. —Richard Serra One of the most significant artists of his generation, he has produced large-scale, site-specific sculptures for architectural, urban, and landscape settings spanning the globe, from Iceland to New Zealand. Born in 1938 in San Francisco, Richard Serra lives and works in New York and on the North Fork of Long Island. Serra attended the University of California, Berkeley before transferring to the University of California, Santa Barbara graduating with a BA in English literature; he then studied painting at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut completing both a BFA and MFA. He began showing with Leo Castelli in 1968, and his first solo exhibition in New York was held at the Leo Castelli Warehouse the following year. His first solo museum exhibition was held at the Pasadena Art Museum, California, in 1970. Serra’s sculptures and drawings have been celebrated with two retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, twenty years apart: Richard Serra/Sculpture (1986) and Richard Serra Sculpture: Forty Years (2007). He has had solo exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1977–78); Kunsthalle Tübingen, Germany (1978); Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany (1978); Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Netherlands (1980, 2014, and 2017); Centre Pompidou, Paris (1983–84); Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld, Germany (1985); Louisiana Museum, Humlebæk, Denmark (1986); Westfälisches Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte, Münster, Germany (1987); Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich (1987); Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Netherlands (1988); Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, Netherlands (1990); Kunsthaus Zürich (1990); CAPC Musée d’Art Contemporain, Bordeaux, France (1990); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (1992); Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, Germany (1992); Dia Center for the Arts, New York (1997); Centro de Arte Hélio Oiticica, Rio de Janeiro (1997–98); Trajan’s Market, Rome (1999–2000); Pulitzer Arts Foundation, St. Louis (2003); and Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, Naples, Italy (2004). In 2005 The Matter of Time (1994–2005), a series of eight large-scale works, was installed permanently at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain. For Monumenta 2008, the major site-specific installation Promenade was shown at the Grand Palais, Paris. Three years later the large-scale, site-specific sculpture 7 was permanently installed opposite the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. A major traveling retrospective dedicated to Serra’s drawings was presented at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Menil Collection, Houston (the organizing venue), from 2011 to 2012. In 2014 the Qatar Museums Authority presented a two-venue retrospective survey of Serra’s work, and East-West/West-East (2014) was permanently installed in the Brouq Nature Reserve, Zekreet, Qatar. In 2017 the Museum Wiesbaden, Germany, presented Richard Serra: Props, Films, Early Works; an overview of Serra’s work in film and video was shown at the Kunstmuseum Basel; and recent drawings were featured at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Serra has participated in numerous major international exhibitions, including Documenta (1972, 1977, 1982, and 1987), and the Biennale di Venezia (1980, 1984, 2001, and 2013), and his work has been included in many Whitney Annuals and Biennials (1968, 1970, 1973, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1995, and 2006). The Likes of Us
By Maya Hayuk
Located in New York, NY
Maya Hayuk The Likes of Us, 2017 Screenprint with spray paint in colors on Arches paper Signed, numbered 91/100, dated, and titled in pencil along lower edge. Accompanied by COA hand signed by the artist. 20 × 15 inches Unframed This work is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from the artist. Excellent condition. Published by the artist; Printed by Haven Press, Brooklyn, New York More about Maya Hayuk: Maya Hayuk is a Ukrainian-American artist with an extensive background in a wide range of generative art and social practices. Hayuk weaves visual information from her immediate surroundings into elaborate, painterly abstractions, thus creating an engaging mix of referents from popular culture and advanced painting practices alike. Her large-scale, improvised murals speak to the artist’s obsession with symmetry, “perfect imperfection” and outer/ inner space. Her works look to expanding consciousness and perception to find patterns and interconnectivity. Ultimately, the traditional and the contemporary blend into new harmonic, dissonant, optimistic, experimental compositions. Hayuk considers her studio painting and mural practices as both inversely relational and symbiotic. Hayuk’s work has been the subject of one person exhibitions and commissions at venues including FRAC Museum in Dunkerque, FR (2019), The Ukrainian Museum New York (2017), The Bowery Wall, NY (2014), The Hammer Museum, LA (2013), The Museum Of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto, Canada (2013), Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht, The Netherlands (2012); Socrates Sculpture Park, Queens, New York (2011); Musee E.A.V., Rio De Janiero, Brazil (2011); Matucana Artspace, Santiago, Chile (2009); Democratic National Convention, Denver, Colorado (2008); and Monster Island, Brooklyn, New York (2005-2011). Her work has been included in group exhibitions such as Streetopia, The Luggage Store, San Francisco (2012); Black Light & Outer Space, Secret Project Robot, Brooklyn, New York (2011); Rojo Nova, Museum of Image and Sound, Sao Paolo, Brazil (2010); Contemporary Art 2010, Ukrainian Institute of America, New York (2010); Sous l’es bombs, Musee International des Arts Modeste, Sete, France (2007); The Zine Unbound: Kults, Werewolves, and Sarcastic Hippies, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA (2005). In 2018, Hayuk gave a TEDx Talk from The Center of Art and Design (CAD) in Brussels, Belgium, which recounts the arc of her developing career. Maya Hayuk’s work is represented in numerous public and private collections internationally including FRAC Museum (FR), The Ukrainian Museum (US), The Millennium Iconoclast Museum of Art (Brussels, Belgium), The Embassy of the United States of America (Sanaa, Yemen), The Embassy of the United States of America Residence (Costa Rica), MOCA Jacksonville (FL), The Ullens Foundation (Brussels, Belgium), The Dean Collection (US) and Wayne Coyne...

His work, whether painted on canvas or on walls, is characterized by a dynamic energy and explosive use of color. Dondi became associated with a group of legendary artists working in the East Village, including Futura, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. His canvas works reiterated the lettering, symbolic icons, and stick figures that were his signature marks on the streets, while his later work from the 1990s included collages that juxtaposed pencil drawings with blueprints of the subway system—which had previously served as his canvas. Futura: Futura 2000 is a contemporary American graffiti artist. Over the course of his career, he transitioned from making New York-based subway graffiti in the early 1970s, to exhibiting at Fun Gallery in the 1980s alongside major artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Kenny Scharf. He went on to collaborate with the punk band The Clash, designing their album art and performing live graffiti during their concerts. Today, McGurr’s work can be found in the collections of the Museo de Arte Moderna di Bologna, the Musée de Vire in France, and the Museum of the City of New York. Lee Quinones: Lee Quinones is an American-Puerto Rican artist known for the graffiti he made on New York subway cars during the 1970s and 1980s. Quinones addressed political and cultural issues through his graffiti, with quotes such as “Earth is Hell...

FACE, from Portfolio 9m Classic 1960s Op Art lithograph signed/n renowned artist
By Henry Pearson
Located in New York, NY
Henry Pearson FACE, from Portfolio 9, 1964 Color lithograph with deckled edges Signed, titled, and numbered 84/100 in graphite pencil on the front; with publishers' blind stamp 17 1/2 × 22 1/10 inches Publisher Irwin Hollander, with blindstamp Hand Signed and Numbered 84/100 with Irwin Hollander (printer) Blindstamp Unframed Henry Pearson's iconic Pop Art lithograph "Face" from the mid-Sixties is in the permanent Collection of the Museum of Modern Art as well as other public institutions. This Classic Sixties psychedelic designed Op Art lithograph was created as part of the legendary 'Portfolio 9' in 1967 - one of the most influential eras in 20th century art. It was housed in a gray cloth-colored box with maroon paper inner panels and a large maroon "9" designed by Richard Lindner on the cover. Portfolio 9 featured nine of the most important artists of the era, representative of the three major trends: Pop Art, Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism: Roy Lichtenstein, Saul Steinberg, Richard Lindner, Robert Motherwell, Henry Pearson, Louise Nevelson, Sam Francis, Willem de Kooning- and Ellsworth Kelly. The Introduction to the portfolio was written by Una E. Johnson, Curator of Prints & Drawings, The Brooklyn Museum. Johnson wrote in 1967 for the colophon page: "The artists were selected to demonstrate the great diversity and character of lithography in the United States today... the dialogue of diverse forms and many faceted idioms that compose this graphic journal mirror the eloquence and delight the strengths and caprices of a period. Furthermore, they reflect in fine measure the creative achievements of artists attuned to their time." The lithograph offered here has superb provenance: it comes directly from 'Portfolio 9', numbered 84/100. This is the very first time since 1967 that this hand signed & numbered print will be separated from the original portfolio presentation box. According to the description of this print in the catalogue raisonne, "Organized as a celebration of Irwin Hollander's collaboration with American artists working in the medium of lithography, the Portfolio 9 is a compendium of images by nine of Hollander's artist collaborators.
