White Buddha - Stained Glass
Located in New York, NY
One of a kind Buddha made by hand of glass with cement on wood. No frame needed. NYC based artist, Grace has been honing her skills in glass mosaics since 1998. Originally inspired by the mosaic art found underground in subway stations, Grace experimented with shapes and patterns to practice and perfect her glass cutting techniques and assemblage. Her evolution into representational work has allowed her to create pieces that are deeply detailed and realistic, including portraiture and familiar imagery. Grace’s passion for color and instinct for harmonious combinations further adds to the appeal of her art. Grace has had multiple solo and group shows throughout New York and has collectors from all around the world and often collaborates with architects and interior designers in creating site-specific work and custom installations. Small works can be found in retail shops throughout the city. ARTIST STATEMENT Upon my very first exploration of cutting glass and building a mosaic, I realized it required tenacity. The span between the start and finish of a project is never quick and easy. It depends on focus and diligence, and it’s what attracts me most to this medium. As a mosaic artist, my attention is centered on piecing together materials to make art that is visually appealing both for its subject matter as well as its aesthetics. My influences are the structures and symbols I see around me everyday in NYC. Parts of the city such as buildings, water towers, bridges and sewer covers are often the impetus for a project. My travels through the subway tunnels, streets and parks also lead to inspiration. I particularly love the accessible art underground; those magnificent, colorful and bold mosaic designs that brighten up our subway platforms. Works of art that are often rushed passed, but remain ready to be admired and steady in their function. Additionally, I have an inclination to study faces. I look at a subject and see the shapes and shadows that create them. I relish the process of taking their image apart to input color and texture into the tones I see. The use of color and how colors are combined are the most significant decisions in my work. Working with a variety of materials that include stained glass, ceramic figures, window glass, mirror and cement are the force from which my designs are created. Glass is scored, broken and nipped down into the pieces I desire to compose the whole. I work quite deliberately, concisely employing both traditional mosaic methods with innovative techniques. Mosaic making has a long history and tradition and I always want to honor that in my work. Part of that homage is to build upon that base by creating and using materials in a unique way. I often combine my glass with paper, foil...

Basquiat Gray vinyl record signed (Basquiat Record Art)
By Jean-Michel Basquiat
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Rare "Gray, Shades of..." Vinyl Record Album featuring offset cover art from Jean Michel Basquiat, "who immortalized the work by integrating his fingerprint into the original piece (Gray Co-founder Michael Holman)." This jewel of a record also includes previously lost original sound recordings featuring Basquiat’s music and voice. Rare 1st pressing published in 2010 from a sold out edition of 1000. This piece is hand-signed by fellow Gray members & Basquiat collaborators Nick Taylor and Michael Holman. 12x12 inches New and sealed in its original packaging. Excellent condition. Hand signed and numbered from an edition of 1000. Looks fantastic framed. Glenn O'Brien, "Gray Matters," GQ Magazine April, 2011 "Gray’s approach to music was having heard music, to approach instruments and sound systems the way one would pick up a strange machine and try to intuit its operation and function. Since Basquiat didn’t know guitar technique, it seemed like a good idea to play one with a steel file. Michael Holman discovered that you could achieve a very nice effect by pulling masking tape off the skin of a snare drum... And then there was the clarinet that Basquiat liked to walk around with, that was as much a scepter and wand as wind instrument. This utterly charming 27-track album is chock full of the road not taken, which sounds so right just now. It is refreshingly stripped of flagrant virtuosity but it is conceived brilliantly, played perfectly, and arranged impeccably... If a wine can have notes of chocolate, leather, licorice, and tobacco, then this record can have notes of William DeVaughn, Willie Hutch, Marcel Duchamp, Larry Coryell, the Modernaires, Sergio Mendez, the Tube Bar Tape, Chet Baker, Melvin Van Peebles, Gilberto/Jobim, and Dragnet." He received a BA in aesthetics from the University of Tokyo in 1956 where he also studied music and art history. After graduating, he studied for a year with composer Thrasybulus Georgiades Georgiades at the University of Munich and for two years with composer Woflgang Fortner at the International Music College in Freiburg. He attended the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt in 1957, when he met Karlheinz Stockhausen, and in 1958, when he met John Cage. Cage, and through him Marcel Duchamp, had a significant influence on Paik as he became a major force in the avant-garde through performances. In Hommage à John Cage (1959), Paik employed audiotape and performance to attack traditional musical instrumentation and compositional practices, splicing together piano playing, screaming, bits of classical music, and sound effects. Realizing that taped sound was not enough, he decided to move into performance, first by introducing performative actions into his audio works. In 1961 Paik performed Simple, Zen for Head and Étude Platonique No. 3, in which he became a volatile figure, thrashing about in unexpected patterns and sudden movements to his signature soundtracks. In 1962 Paik participated in the Fluxus International Festival of the New Music in Weisbaden. Paik's first exhibition, entitled Exposition of Music - Electronic Television, in 1963 at Galerie Parnass at Wuppertal, launched his transition from composer and performance artist to the inventor of a new art form: an engagement with the material site of television as an instrument. In the exhibition, thirteen televisions lay on their backs and sides with their reception altered; for example, Zen for TV (1963) reduced the television picture to a horizontal line and Kuba TV (1963) shrank and expanded the image on the television set according to the changing volume. In 1964 Paik traveled to the US. He quickly settled in New York and became a leading innovator among an emerging generation of artists seeking new modes of artistic expression and distribution. That same year, Paik collaborated with Shuya Abe to create Robot K-456 (1964), a remote controlled robot that played audiotaped speeches by John F. Kennedy and defecated beans in Paik's Robot Opera (1964). In the interactive work Magnet TV (1965), Paik invited viewers to modify the television's output into swerving abstract lines through the movement of a magnet over the TV. In 1967 Paik and frequent collaborator Charlotte Moorman were arrested when Moorman performed Paik's Opera Sextronique (1967), a striptease as she played the cello at the Filmmakers' Cinematheque in New York. Paik's TV Bra for Living Sculpture (1969), which Moorman wore in performances, featured two television tubes...

Memento (Dr. Martin Luther King John F. Kennedy Malcolm X, Civil rights workers
By Kerry James Marshall
Located in New York, NY
Kerry James Marshall Memento, 1997 Featuring civil rights leaders: Dr. Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, Medger Evers, Andrew Goodman, James Chaney, Michael Schwerner, Malcolm X, Black Panthers 6-Color lithograph with gold powder on soft white Somerset paper with deckled edges Pencil signed, titled and numbered 6/33 on the front Frame included: elegantly floated and framed in a handmade museum frame with UV plexiglass This is an excellent impression of a scarce and consequential 1997 Kerry James Marshall graphic work printed by Master Printer Ross Zirkle (1955-2007) at Tamarind Institute, Albuquerque, New Mexico (the publisher). Other examples of this work are in major public institutions such as SFMOMA, the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Yale University Art Gallery and the Library of Congress - which is why Memento is so elusive and rarely found on the market. The present example is elegantly floated and framed in a white wood hand made museum frame with UV Optium Acrylic glazing - the highest quality. Measurements: Framed: 33 inches vertical by 47 inches horizontal by 2 inches Artwork: 30 inches vertical by 44 inches horizontal Bibliography: Pamela Franks and Robert E. Steele, Embodied: Black Identities in American Art from the Yale University Art Gallery, exh. cat. (New Haven, Conn.: Yale University Art Gallery, 2010), 62, ill. Text from the Yale University Art Gallery website: Kerry James Marshall’s Memento memorializes the persons associated with the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s. The work depicts multiple headshots of civic leaders and other individuals who died during this era, such as Medger Evers and members of the Black Panther Party. Rather than drawing these images, Marshall uses the newspaper obituary photographs that the general public is accustomed to seeing. He exalts the fallen individuals by placing angel wings behind most of the images. A black woman carrying an urn of flowers stands before portraits of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and John F. Kennedy. The woman turns toward the viewer, asking us, and the larger community, to “mourn” with her. And from the Birmingham Alabama Art...

Still Life, from To and From Rrose Selavy, for Marcel Duchamp, Lt Ed silkscreen
By Shusaku Arakawa
Located in New York, NY
Shusaku Arakawa Still Life, from To and From Rrose Selavy, for Marcel Duchamp, 1967 Limited Edition Silkscreen on velincarton (thin board) paper 10 1/2 × 13 1/4 inches Limited Edition of 60 Hand signed, titled and dated on the front Unframed The entire portfolio, including the present work, is referenced in the Marcel Duchamp catalogue raisonne: Arturo Schwarz The Complete Works of Marcel Duchamp, Abrams, P.532, 344c Eager to share Marcel Duchamp with Japanese audiences, Shuzo Takiguchi - a Japanese-born poet, critic, and artist with ties to Surrealist circles, assembled an international portfolio of graphic works by various artists with strong ties to Duchamp, to accompany the deluxe version of his monograph, "To and From Rrose Sélavy". The present work was created for this portfolio by one of Marcel Duchamp's friends, Shusaku Arakawa. It is signed, dated and titled on the front - and can be exhibited both vertically and horizontally - (see photos). The present work, along with others in the portfolio, was published in Japan and is rarely found stateside. Shusaku Arakawa (荒川 修作 Arakawa Shūsaku, July 6, 1936 – May 18, 2010) who spoke of himself as an “eternal outsider” and “abstractionist of the distant future,” first studied mathematics and medicine at the University of Tokyo, and art at the Musashino Art University. He was a member of Tokyo’s Neo-Dadaism Organizers, a precursor to The Neo-Dada movement. Arakawa’s early works were first displayed in the infamous Yomiuri Independent Exhibition, a watershed event for postwar Japanese avant-garde art. Arakawa arrived in New York in 1961 with fourteen dollars in his pocket and a telephone number for Marcel Duchamp, whom he phoned from the airport and over time formed a close friendship. He started using diagrams within his paintings as philosophical propositions. Jean-Francois Lyotard has said of Arakawa’s work that it “makes us think through the eyes,” and Hans-Georg Gadamer has described it as transforming “the usual constancies of orientation into a strange, enticing game—a game of continually thinking out.” Quoting Paul Celan...
