Chinese Blue and White Fu Lion Headrest
Located in Chicago, IL
This small ceramic block is actually a form of Chinese headrest or neck pillow. Popular during the Qing dynasty, rigid headrests such as this were used by upper-class women to protect their elaborate hairstyles by elevating the head during slumber. This example dates to the early 20th century and is glazed in the blue-and-white style with deep, cobalt-blue color. The headrest is decorated on all sides with mythical fu lion dogs playing with a brocade ball, a motif that evokes the idiom "may you and your descendant achieve high rank." A powerful and benevolent guardian, the fu lion (shizi) is the perfect force to protect against nightmares and bad energy. A geometric meander trims the edges and small bats frame coin...

The Black Road: Verdigris, Classical Male Bust, Resin, Patina and Gold Leaf
Located in Chicago, IL
This extraordinary sculptural portrait head takes its beginnings from classical antiquity. Attention to detail and complete understanding of the human figure are evident. The sculpture, which is made of resin and patinaed and is then highlighted with gold leaf. Dean Kugler The Black Road: Verdigris resin, gold leaf, patina Measures: 10 H x 13 W x 19 D in 25.40 H x 33.02 W x 48.26 D cm DK0045 Kugler uses scale and the juxtaposition of disparate elements in order to engage and challenge the viewer. He combines elements such as strength and weakness or beauty and damage to be experienced simultaneously within the same piece of work to create a tense energy. Kugler also incorporates the technical skill of tight rendering with the dynamism of abstraction to create this energy to add additional excitement and intrigue to his aesthetic.   Dean Kugler is a seasoned interdisciplinary artist, painter, and figurative sculptor. His 3D work is featured primarily at Gallery Victor Armendariz in Chicago. In the last three years, Dean has also been featured at Abend Gallery in Denver, The Figge Art Museum, and Bereskin Gallery in Iowa. He has shown at SOFA Chicago in 2017, 2018, and 2019 and participated in ArtPrize in 2013, 2014, and 2015. He sees himself primarily as a sculptor due to the challenges he finds and thrives on within the process. In all its beauty, crudeness, and subtleties, the figure offers infinite opportunities to express feelings and emotions. There is also a physicality to sculpture that requires the work to be experienced through movement in order to reveal more about the piece. Dean has always been drawn to the interactive nature of large-scale sculpture that is available to the public - he loves the idea that his work entices the observer to go beyond what they can see and add tactility to the experience. By using both realism and abstraction, he creates a visual that challenges the viewer to resolve what they are seeing. Therefore, providing a greater connection between the artist and the viewer. Thaddeus Wolfe, "Untitled", 2022
By Thaddeus Wolfe
Located in New York, NY
Thaddeus Wolfe [American, b. 1979] Untitled, 2022 Glass 22.25 x 10 x 12.75 inches 56.5 x 25.4 x 32.4 cm Thaddeus Wolfe has developed a wholly original approach to sculpting glass. Combining techniques of glassblowing and casting, Wolfe achieves what would not otherwise be possible in the material--developing his signature vocabulary of angular, highly textured forms. His unique process begins by sculpting a form from broken and carved styrofoam pieces, using meticulous yet improvisitory methods. From this form, Wolfe generates a single-use plaster mold for casting the glass. Color and texture are achieved by layering different tints of glass onto a glass bubble, which is inflated into the cavity of the heated mold. After un-molding the piece, Wolfe carves and polishes certain surfaces to reveal the interior strata. The resulting works which he often refers to as Assemblages are part painterly, part geological. Wolfe has held residencies at Creative Glass Center of America Millville, NJ; Museum of Glass, Tacoma, WA; and Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, WA. His work is in the permanent collections of the Corning Museum of Glass, NY (where he was awarded the 2016 Rakow Commission); Indianapolis Museum of Art, IN; Musée de Arts...

"Untitled Vessel 6" Coiled and Sewn Cotton Fiber Sculpture by Doug Johnston
By Doug Johnston
Located in Brooklyn, NY
-Made in 2015 -cotton cord, and sewing thread. "Untitled (Vessel 6)" was made in 2015 as part of a body of work for my exhibition "what it is." It is a sculptural vessel-form object made by coiling and sewing cotton rope with an industrial zig-zag sewing machine. The piece is not made with a specific form in mind when started, so its shape emerges somewhat organically during its making. Multiple smaller, individual vessels are made, then joined together. More rope is coiled and sewn onto the new form, and new parts are incorporated and built upon from there. This piece features a large base sewn with black-dyed cotton rope, which acts as a visual and physical anchor for the object. The form is simultaneously architectural and creature-like while retaining a conceptual and actual openness. Since 2010 Doug Johnston has produced a wide range of functional and sculptural objects using a process of coiling and stitching rope using industrial sewing machines...
