English 17th century portrait of a lady

A 17th century English portrait of a lady by Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680), half-length in a painted feigned oval, wearing a green silk gown with chestnut coloured cloak over one shoulder, her fair hair curled in the fashionable ringlet style of the period. Oil on canvas in an English giltwood 'Lely' frame.
We are grateful to Diana Dethloff and Catharine MacLeod (who are currently working on a Lely catalogue raisonné) for their confirmation of Lely as the artist from photograph analysis of this previously unidentified early work.

The sitter is likely to have been from an upper class or aristocratic family in court circles, who were the main source of Lely`s patronage. The simple composition serves to highlight the beauty of the sitter through portraying her pale decolletage and complexion, set against the gentle gaze of her blue eyes, the soft blush of her cheeks and her full red lips.
Peter Lely (1618-1680) was originally of dutch origin and became Principle Painter to the King in 1661, following in the footsteps of Van Dyck who had died in 1641. He dominated the portrait painting scene in England for over 20 years, creating a distinctive 'court look' in his work which had a strong influence on many other artists. He had an extremely successful and popular portrait practice which meant that he soon had to develop production methods that could accommodate the high demand for portraits, and also for copies and versions of them which were given as gifts to family and courtiers. The use of studio assistants was a common practice for busy artists and as with Van Dyck, Lely is known to have used specialist assistants to execute particular parts of his paintings. This hand-colored map from circa 1659 by Johannes Blaeu, titled "Ducatus Silesiae Ligniciensis," depicts the region centered around Legnica (Lignitz) in southwestern Poland.
It extends to include the cities of Lublin, Jawor, and Lwówek Śląski.
The map features decorative elements such as a title cartouche adorned with a putto, garlands of fruit, and birds, and a distance scale cartouche that includes a hunter with his dogs.
This map is dedicated to Georgius Rodulfus, the Duke of Silesia, by Ionas Scultetus, reflecting the map's historical context and noble patronage.

This expansive coastal landscape, with a fortress-city overlooking the sea and a small castle with a watchtower, serves as the stage for an eventful battle scene between soldiers and, presumably, a band of brigands.
It is an illustrative typology attributable to Pandolfo Reschi (Danzica 1643 - Florence 1696), known for his works in which he perfectly combines the airy landscape of Tuscan-Roman matrix with images of knights in battle or brigands intent on their raids.
Pandolfo Reschi was born in Gdansk but from an early age he moved to Rome where he began his brilliant career following the style of Salvator Rosa, even if his real teacher was the Flemish-Italianized Livio Mehus. With Mehus and Rosa he refined his skills as a battle painter and was later taken to the workshop by the Borgognone, even if his main occupation was that of a genre painter.
The decisive turning point in his career came after his transfer to Florence, around the middle of 1660, where he continued his studies with Livio Mehus. After a decade he was now an established and highly coveted painter, so much so that in 1670 he was hired by the Medici court as protege of Cardinal Francesco Maria de Medici...

She wears a ring on her left hand, which combined with her pale gown possibly alludes to her recent marriage. There are traces of a signature in ligature 'JG' in a lower fold of the sitter's right hand sleeve.

This detailed map from circa 1659 by Willem Blaeu, titled "Das Wiflispurgergow," highlights the southwestern region of Switzerland.
It features significant landmarks such as Geneva, Lake Geneva (Lacus Lemannus), Lake Neuchatel, Lake Biel, Bern, Freiburg, and Lake Thuner.
Based on the work of Gerard Mercator, this map is published with Spanish text on the verso, dating from the period between 1659 and 1672.
Measuring 19.9 inches wide by 15.1 inches high, the map is rendered in full contemporary color on a bright sheet that bears a large watermark of the god Atlas.
The condition is excellent, with a sharp impression, short centerfold separations at the top and bottom margins, and an archivally repaired tear in the right margin.
