Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the publisher. This is one of only 750 hand signed lithographic posters, published in 1982 to celebrate the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics . However, the publisher is said to have destroyed many of the works that did not sell in the original marketing period, so only about 200-250 are said t remain. The Olympic Committee commissioned 15 nationally known artists, including West Coast artists like Sam Francis and Richard Diebenkorn, to create unique designs to promote the event. This was Diebenkorn's contribution to the portfolio. About the artist-
Romare Bearden (1911-1988)
Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Romare Bearden is one of America’s most esteemed African American contemporary artists. Bearden grew up in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City and attended New York University where he received a degree in mathematics. Following graduation, Bearden turned his attention to art, pursuing further studies with George Grosz at the Art Students League.
The artist served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945. After leaving the Army, Bearden used funds from the GI Bill to travel to Europe for six months to study art history and philosophy at the Sorbonne. During this trip, Bearden had the opportunity to meet Henri Matisse, Georges Braque and Joan Miro, all of who had a strong influence on his artwork.
Bearden’s work on canvas and collages expressed the complexities of rural Black America. “My intention is to reveal through pictorial complexities of the life I know,” he said. He integrated scenes from his childhood in North Carolina and from New York City, including many rituals and social customs. Another theme throughout his work was music. Bearden grew up surrounded by musicians and loved jazz and blues.
Romare Bearden’s artwork can be found in numerous permanent collections around the country including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Retrospective exhibitions of Bearden’s art have been held by The Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte; the Museum of Modern Art; the Detroit Institute; and the Studio Museum in Harlem. No 51 to 100 contain and original etching/aquatint 'Salpiglossis'. Each signed and numbered by the artist. All watercolours reproduced within the book by Elizabeth Blackadder and commentary by Deborah Kellaway.

Painter and printmaker, born Falkirk, Scotland. She studied at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art, 1949-54. In 1954 she was awarded a Carnegie Travelling Scholarship and visited Yugoslavia, Greece and Italy and was much influenced by Byzantine architecture and mosaics. In 1956 she married the painter John Houston with whom she has since travelled widely. Flowers, cats and small objects are often arranged perpendicularly across the paper or canvas.
Elected RSW in 1960, an Associate of the RSA 1963, an Associate of the RA 1971, RSA 1972 and RA 1976, she is the first woman to be elected both RA and RSA. Blackadder has exhibited at the Mercury Gallery, London, Marjorie Parr Gallery and abroad and is a member of the Scottish Arts Club. Her work is represented in Aberdeen University, Bolton Art Gallery, Brighton and Hove Museums and Art Galleries, City Arts Centre, Edinburgh, Fleming Collection, Glasgow Print Studio, Gracefield Arts Centre, New Hall College, Cambridge, Otter Gallery, Reading Art...
