MISIA BROADHEAD was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in Italy, in Rome and Tuscany. Italy was a great source of inspiration for her creativity as she was surrounded by its marvels of art and architecture. She attended The Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting in London and upon her return to Rome hosted her first solo exhibit in 1980. She proceeded to work on commissions in Rome and Tuscany and subsequently hosted exhibits of her paintings in Washington, D.C. She later partnered with Susan Byrne and opened a gallery in Middleburg, Virginia, now known as The Byrne Gallery. When she married the English painter Anthony Barham in Middleburg, they created The Broadhead-Barham Studio open to visitors for commissioned work and sale of paintings. Born in Paris, France in 1914, Andre Delfau became an internationally acclaimed stage, set and costume designer who worked world-wide from the 1930s to the 1980s. Delfau was a life long artist and painted independently of his noted design career. His artwork is recognized for it’s vibrant color and form, and a particularly keen use of line. He was highly influenced by the French Modern trends of Cubism and Surrealism, and his artwork is often infused with a dramatic sense of architecture and perspective.
Delfau created fashion designs for such major Paris couture houses as Balmain, Jean Patou and Balenciaga. He completed noteworthy set designs and costumes for numerous international operatic and ballet productions, including those at the Royal Danish Ballet, the Royal Ballet of Great Britain, the Paris Opera, the Dance Theater of Harlem, the Ruth Page International Ballet, the Civic Ballet of Chicago, the Chicago Opera Ballet and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, among others. The son of a musician, Ludwig Sander was exposed to art as a youngster through visits to the Metropolitan Museum and reproductions of Art Nouveau and the Jugendstil in the Manchester Guardian and in German magazines to which his parents subscribed. Having studied architecture and architectural drawing in high school, he entered New York University in 1924, but left two years later to become a painter. While we do not see the fan's letter that prompted this response from Johns, it's not too difficult to guess, as Jasper Johns replies, stating, in part, "I wish I felt I could advise you but I can't. One either jumps in the water or doesn't. There doesn't seem to be any in-between." No truer words could have been spoken regarding the artist's life.
