Contemporary Abstract Drawings and Watercolors
CONTEMPORARY STYLE
Used to refer to a time rather than an aesthetic, Contemporary art generally describes pieces created after 1970 or being made by living artists anywhere in the world. This immediacy means it encompasses art responding to the present moment through diverse subjects, media and themes. Contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, performance, digital art, video and more frequently includes work that is attempting to reshape current ideas about what art can be, from Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s use of candy to memorialize a lover he lost to AIDS-related complications to Jenny Holzer’s ongoing “Truisms,” a Conceptual series that sees provocative messages printed on billboards, T-shirts, benches and other public places that exist outside of formal exhibitions and the conventional “white cube” of galleries.
Contemporary art has been pushing the boundaries of creative expression for years. Its disruption of the traditional concepts of art are often aiming to engage viewers in complex questions about identity, society and culture. In the latter part of the 20th century, contemporary movements included Land art, in which artists like Robert Smithson and Michael Heizer create large-scale, site-specific sculptures, installations and other works in soil and bodies of water; Sound art, with artists such as Christian Marclay and Susan Philipsz centering art on sonic experiences; and New Media art, in which mass media and digital culture inform the work of artists such as Nam June Paik and Rafaël Rozendaal.
The first decades of the 21st century have seen the growth of Contemporary African art, the revival of figurative painting, the emergence of street art and the rise of NFTs, unique digital artworks that are powered by blockchain technology.
Major Contemporary artists practicing now include Ai Weiwei, Cecily Brown, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami and Kara Walker.

This series was inspired by a 1950’s era instruction manual found while clearing out my father’s basement workshop. The How To Light A Model manual employed voluptuous female models to teach lighting techniques to amateur photographers such as my father. Diagrams plot the prescribed direction of the lights. The nude women hold the pose, their lips bright red and their feet dirty from the studio floor. As naked props for the authoritarian photographer, their vulnerability seems palpable.
This work visualizes the human condition as a balance between feral and fabricated worlds. Vivid, oversized creatures embody instinctual energy. Wax seals, gold spheres and text-like marks signify rational structures. One speaks in a whisper, the other in a hiss.

The art of Philip Wittmann is founded on signals. For him, signs serve as a bridge between abstraction, reality and writing, too. When he was 26 years old, he began painting as a hobbyist using 'pure' abstraction. However, he believed his work lacked a solid foundation upon which to grow.
He discovered a book on the origins of the Chinese alphabet, which origins are essentially signs, in 2008 while taking a calligraphy class. The 26 letters of our Latin alphabet are less pictorial than the Chinese characters as we know them now. He discovered that pictorial representation is more prevalent when examining the origins of alphabets—all alphabets, in fact—because there is frequently a similarity between the sign's true meaning and what it is meant to represent. For instance, the symbol for a turtle in the original Chinese script resembles a turtle.

In a fusion of myth and archetypal features, the works aim to transport viewers into the intricate realm of "Heroine's Journey," an exhibition that encapsulates the essence of unity, rebellion and revolutionary figures, transformation, and resistance, and the enduring power of mythological narratives.
Through a combination of limited colors, shapes, and ancient symbolism, these works invite an odyssey that transcends the boundaries of culture, time, and narrative. Drawing inspiration from Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey. Avani's works weave together a narrative that celebrates the interconnectedness of all living beings.
Avani employs a chosen palette of alchemical colors: various gold, silver, bronze, tint, and copper, representing metals and planets. Each color carries deep, symbolic significance. Gold symbolizes the golden spirit and enlightenment, while silver connects to the feminine aspect and the moon's goddess associations. Copper represents both women and the essence of love. These colors create a narrative resonating with universal themes of transformation and spirituality, mirroring the elevation of the soul through alchemical symbolism.
Parimah Avani, born in 1988 in Tehran, Iran, is a multidisciplinary artist and a recognized figure in contemporary hermetic Persian literature and the avant-garde "Other" movement. Her book, "Magic Verses of Antalus," was a finalist for the prestigious "Shamlou" Award. Her most recent achievement is winning an art competition for a scholarship from Werkstatt Plettenberg in Germany, culminating in a solo exhibition held at the Gallery of the German Bank of Sparkasse. Avani's artistic journey began with travels to China and Russia during her formative years, oriental philosophies, particularly Zen and Buddhism, and folk arts ignited her passion for comparative mythology evident in her archaic style. In 2009, she moved to Rome, Italy to study multimedia art, and gained a Master’s in painting at the Fine Art Academy of Rome. What makes this series unique: it is deeply behind the dynamic emotion of each gestural figure, in a minimalistic manner, and the vigorous and unbridled energy of brushstrokes, is raw, spontaneous, and emotionally charged.
Her works in this series challenge oppression and gender-related issues by applying oriental brushstrokes of calligraphy in ink as a primary tool, to fragile subjects.

The artwork is expressively poetic, with an exclusive title that refers to the socio-political context, and the application of limited color of metals" various copper, gold, silver, bronze" have metaphorical features of alchemy. In this series artist took positions, and gestures of revolutionary and rebellious bodies on the battlefield of revolution and transformed them dynamically into precious sources of resistance by spiritual transitions of colors akin to alchemy, meat, and blood found their symbolic meaning through colors and expressive brushstrokes, metals here refer to bodies of freedom seekers, shapable, flexible, shiny and a source of strength, that highlights how a body becomes a battlefield, a golden source of sacrifice, a silver font of resistance, copper as shedding blood for freedom.
What makes this series unique: it is deeply behind the dynamic emotion of each gestural figure, in a minimalistic manner, and the vigorous and unbridled energy of brushstrokes, is raw, spontaneous, and emotionally charged.
Her works in this series challenge oppression and gender-related issues by applying oriental brushstrokes of calligraphy in ink as a primary tool, to fragile subjects.
