" The drawing as a gesture allows me to exploit a (re)mise-en-scene as so many possibilities in the making. Through the quality of drawing as a marker of thought, it is not a question of constructing "dream worlds" but rather of setting up a device that would allow for a conscious dialogue of a certain perception of the real."
Fabien Granet is pursuing a research on the perception of the landscape, on our ways of trying to represent it, to understand it, to understand its structures.
The drawn "landscapes" are thus as many projections of the artist, which convene and reveal his artistic path, the influences of his culture, his utopias, his dystopian fantasies. Another shift where the quasi scientific concern of objective rigor and the mental construction of an construction of an individual course. The drawing appears in this sense as an act as much as a work which The drawing appears in this sense as an act as much as a work which is registered in a research and a quest to pierce the enigma of the real.
In his landscapes, Fabien Granet evokes a process of the mind, where shreds and fragments become entangled in a re-arrangement of of reality. Snippets of architecture and geometrical figures draw human and his gaze into it. The landscape is a human creation, but how does human try to perceive it, how does he understand its constructions? what is his mental image of it? Chaos and structure intersect in a paradox of our vision of the world: the artist picks out the sensitive elements in a reflection on the possibilities in the making.

This captivating Victorian sanguine portrait drawing of a young girl is by Pre-Raphaelite British artist Edward Robert Hughes. The red chalk portrait dated 1885 is of Mildred, her name inscribed upper left. She is seated, hands in lap, her long hair flowing over her shoulders in typical Pre-Raphaelite manner. Great detail has gone into depicting the smocking on her dress and the artist has perfectly captured her sweet innocent nature.

Condition. Red chalk on paper, image size 22 inches by 18 inches and in good condition.
Housed in a complimentary frame and glazed, 28 inches by 24 inches framed and in very good condition.
Edward Robert Hughes - Not to be confused with Edward Hughes (1832 - 1908), who specialised in portrait painting. Edward Robert Hughes RWS (1851 – 1914) was an English painter who worked prominently in watercolours, but also produced a number of significant oil paintings. He was influenced by his uncle and eminent artist, Arthur Hughes who was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and worked closely with one of the Brotherhood's founders, William Holman Hunt. Having settled on his career choice, Edward Robert Hughes attended Heatherley's in London to prepare himself for the chance of auditioning for the Royal Academy School. Hughes became a student at the Royal Academy School in 1868. While Pre-Raphaelitism played an influential part in shaping Hughes work, Aestheticism is also seen in his paintings. E.R.Hughes is widely known for his works Midsummer Eve and Night With Her Train of Stars yet he built a career as a portrait painter to the upper classes. In addition to being an accomplished artist himself, E.R.Hughes was also a studio assistant to the elder artist and Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood founding member William Holman Hunt when Hunt suffered from glaucoma. Two of the paintings that Hughes worked on with Hunt were The Light of the World, which is displayed in St Paul's Cathedral, and The Lady of Shalott, which is exhibited at the Wadsworth Atheneum. On his own he experimented with ambitious techniques and was a perfectionist; he did numerous studies for many of his paintings, some of which turned out to be good enough for exhibition. Hughes held several important offices within the artistic community over his lifetime such as becoming a member of the Art Workers Guild in 1888, and was on their committee from 1895 to 1897. He was elected to Associate Membership of The Royal Water Colour Society (ARWS) on 18 February 1891, and he chose as his diploma work for election to full membership a mystical piece (Oh, What's That in the Hollow?) inspired by a verse by Christina Rossetti entitled Amor Mundi. His painting A Witch was given by the Royal Watercolour Society to King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra to mark the coronation in 1902. In later years Hughes served as the Vice-President of the RWS before leaving in 1903. Throughout his career, E.R.Hughes exhibited his works in several galleries around London: Dudley Gallery, Grosvenor Gallery, New Gallery, The Royal Academy, and toward the end of his career he exhibited with The Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours (RWS). The painting and the preparatory drawing resemble the composition of an engraving after Ferraù Fenzoni by Francesco Villamena. Drawing, engraving and painting are almost identical, except for minor differences. Even the measurements nearly correspond: painting (32 x 25,5 cm), drawing (30 x 20,5 cm), engraving (31,1 x 23,5 cm).
Dr. Guiseppe Scavizzi confirmed the attribution of the present panting to Fenzoni and he dates it to c. 1590.
The inscription on the drawing reads “Ferrau Fenzonio da Faenza invt. esque. . . imp. da Fran: Villamena . . .”. The engraving’s inscription also lists place and date “Ferra Fensionius inventor/F. Villamoena sculpsit Rome/Aspectu fruitur… antra puer/cum Privilegio… 1613”.
Interestingly, the engraving is not mirrored as it is in most printing processes. Painting, drawing and engraving are not reversed but the same. It is remarkable to note that there are further paintings by Fenzoni which were engraved in the same order and not reverted. They also show strong parallels regarding the compositions and the measurements (see for example “Deposition of Christ” ).
Ferraù Fenzoni was an Italian painter mainly active in Todi. He is also called Il Faenzone after his birthplace (Faenza). He apprenticed in Rome during the papacy of Gregory XIII and contributed to numerous fresco cycles under pope Sixtus V, such as the Loggia della Benedizioni in the Lateran Palace, the frescoes on the walls and vaults of the Scala Santa of the adjacent Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, and the decoration in the Sistine library. His expressive canvases straddle the styles of Mannerism and Baroque. In 1594, he moved to Todi. A “Last Judgement” by him is housed in the cathedral of Todi. He returned to Faenza in 1599, where he decorated chapels in the cathedral from 1612 to 1616. In 1622, he completed a “Deposition”, now in the local Pinacoteca. In 1640, Fenzoni was named “cavaliere dello speron d’oro” by Cardinal Colonna and, on 25th April 1634, he was nominated vicar and “castellano of Granarolo”.
Fenzoni‘s style is characterized by a mixture of the Mannerism of the Northern Netherlands and the Italian Baroque.

The red sandstone Abbey that resides over Shrewsbury is a welcoming landmark to visitors entering the town and dates back to the Norman era. Despite many renovations and alterations over the years, the medieval and Victorian elements marry remarkably naturally in this grand yet dignified place of worship. Shrewsbury abbey is home to several notable tombs and monuments as well as the remnants of a medieval shrine to St Winefride who was once venerated there. The central light at the top depicts the Trinity, where the Holy Spirit is represented by a dove, God by a vortex (left) and Christ by a lamb (right). The trinity remain linked throughout the design by a blue ribbon decorated with crosses and water droplets. St Winefride’s spiritual strength is represented by the large, central red cross, and her initial rests at its foot. In the left light, beneath the vortex, is corn, and to the right, grapes, both symbols uniting to form a timeless reference to the Eucharist. Below is the ship, a symbol of thee Ecumenical church, and on the right are seven doves representing the seven gifts of the holy spirit: wisdom, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. Two small roundels with Alpha and Omega (‘I am the beginning and the end’ as God notes in the Book of Revelations) unify the upper and lower windows in the design. The central lower light depicts St Winefride, set against a starry backdrop, holding the Martyr’s Palm and Cross beneath her martyr’s crown. The water that is said to have spewed forth from her decapitated head is symbolically illustrated in the fountain at her feet that flows into the adjacent lights.
