Mid 20th Century French Expressionist gouache and watercolour on paper of a café scene. The painting is signed bottom right but as yet undeciphered. The work is titled to the back of the framing 'Bagnoles. Au Casino' and numbered. Presented in plain wood frame under glass, probably the artist's original framing.
A lively and colourful scene of waiters serving their patrons in the bar of a casino. The servers are dressed in crisp linen jackets, black trousers, bow ties whilst balancing their trays of drinks. The customers are dressed in all their colourful finery for an evening at the tables. The artist has captured the feeling of the scene, noise, bustle, conversations and excitement. Bold splashes of colour animate the scene and create an almost Fauvist perspective. The painting in style, execution and subject matter is very much like the work of Fikret Muallâ who was painting at this period.

Son of Alfredo Opisso y Viñas, journalist, historian and critic, and of Antonia Sala y Gil, his sister Regina Opisso, was also a writer. He comes from an enlightened family full of artists. His paternal grandfather was Josep Opisso y Roig, journalist and director of the Diari de Tarragona, father of the also writers Antonia Opisso y Viña and Antoni Opisso y Viña. His maternal great-grandfather was the painter Pere Pau Montaña, his maternal grandfather the fabulist Felipe Jacinto Sala and his maternal uncle, the painter Emilio Sala y Francés. 'Notre Dame de Paris', gouache on paper, by Lucien Génin (circa 1930s). An absolutely charming and now, historic depiction from the 1930s, of the most famous cathedral in France. It is one of the most widely recognised symbols of the city of Paris and the French nation. As the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paris, Notre-Dame contains the cathedra of the Archbishop of Paris. Approximately 12 million people visit Notre-Dame annually, making it the most visited monument in Paris. While undergoing renovation and restoration, the roof of Notre-Dame caught fire on the evening of 15 April 2019. Burning for around 15 hours, the cathedral sustained serious damage. The government of France hopes the reconstruction can be completed by Spring 2024, in time for the opening of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Unlike the actual cathedral, this artwork is in good condition, is newly framed and glazed and signed by the artist in the lower left hand corner. Upon request a video may be provided.

He was born in Barcelona on June 30, 1877, he was registered with the name of Juan Bautista José Pedro. His parents Josep Cardona i Farré (Sant Salvador, 1852-Barcelona, ?) and Maria Lladós i Vidal (Isona, 1855-Barcelona, 1935) came from Sant Salvador de Toló and Isona, respectively, two towns very close to Tremp, in the Pallars Jussà region, close to the Lleida Pyrenees. The Cardona Lladós family was of humble origins, linked to the rural and peasant world. José Cardona and María Lladós married around 1876, when they were twenty-five and twenty-one years old respectively. The couple decided to improve their precarious situation by moving to live in Barcelona.
In 1877 Joan Cardona was born in the family home, at 62 Mediana de San Pedro Street, in the Ribera neighborhood of Barcelona and very close to the Rec Comtal. Joan Cardona was the firstborn of three brothers. When he was six years old, his sister Consuelo was born (1883) and later his younger sister, María (1888), was born. Josep Cardona i Farré was a day laborer and lived at least until the birth of his third daughter, María, in 1888. Her death, for reasons unknown to us, would occur shortly after.
After the death of Josep Cardona, León Farré i Duró (Isona, 1867-Barcelona, 1932) became part of the family nucleus with his mother María Lladós, who took care of the child Cardona and his sisters Consuelo and María.
Farré learned to play the guitar and was the most extraordinary disciple of the composer and guitarist Francesc Tàrrega i Eixea (Vila-real, 1852-Barcelona, 1909). Joan Cardona had in her stepfather the man who instilled in her a special musical and artistic sensitivity. The young Cardona took classes at the Academia Baixas, inaugurated in 1892 by the painter Joan Baixas i Carreter and installed on Carrer del Pi, a private center where a good batch of leading Catalan Modernisme artists were trained.

A long-time Woodstock area resident, Mylo Quam was a self-taught painter and draughtsman whose provocative figural work has been compared to Renaissance painters Sandro Botticelli and Hieronymous Bosch, as well as to twentieth-century artists Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. Quam was an avid reader who derived inspiration from such varied arenas as Shakespeare, the occult, the Bible, Eastern and Western mythology, politics, and popular culture. "I look at everything," the artist was quoted as saying in 1990. "I read the comic pages. Anything visual. There's very little I don't think is a subject for art."
Born in North Dakota, Quam studied Greek language and other classical subjects at Brandeis, Boston, and New York Universities, and worked as a translator of Greek plays while just 17 years old. After a successful career as an actor that included numerous Off-Broadway performances and a leading role in the 1968 Broadway production of Royal Hunt of the Sun, Quam turned his focus to painting.
His first one-man exhibition was at the Boatman Gallery, NYC in 1969 and was followed by twenty solo shows over the course of his career at venues including Gallery A, Flynn Gallery, CFM Gallery, Brewster Gallery, Imperial Gallery, Runyon Winchell Gallery and the Gallery of Erotic Art, all in New York City.
Quam's work was also exhibited at the John Pense Gallery in San Francisco, the Clark-Whitney Gallery in Massachusetts, the Barrett House and Desmond Weiss Galleries in Poughkeepsie, and for many years at the Ann Leonard Gallery in Woodstock.
Quam's paintings were exhibited internationally, as well, notably in a solo exhibition in Haiti-- the first by an American artist in that country. In addition, he was one of four artists to represent the United States in La Bienalle di Venezia, Italia of 1986. As a young man, Quam designed sets and/or costumes for the Actor's Playhouse in New York City, the Lucas Hovig Ballet Company, and the Opera Municipal de Marseilles, France. Born in New York, Julian Levi spent his early years in Philadelphia. He began his art studies art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Arthur B. Carles, Daniel Garber, and Henry McCarter. On graduation, Levi was awarded a scholarship which he used to travel to Italy and Paris. During his stay in Europe, which lasted five years, from 1920 to 1925, Levi was influenced by Cubism. He was especially drawn to the art of Juan Gris, adopting the gentle color harmonies and precise linear treatments of forms found in Gris's works. It is known that Guirand de Scevola was very interested in the Palace of Versailles and its Old Regime atmosphere, that he often painted it and that he participated in the Versailles Revival movement at the beginning of the century. This probably led him to paint scenes in the 18th century style, for which he was particularly well known and which are still sought after.
What is striking is the modernity of the execution of our pastel, which obviously contrasts with its subject in the style of the 18th century. Guirand de Scevoal is a great colourist and he proves it here with eclat, by building up his composition with white pastel highlights, contrasting with brown and black. There is something of the northern painters in this treatment of light. All this, as always with him, is very subtle. The light radiating from the window is almost an abstract notation, but it gives meaning to this interior scene.

If you are interested in African American Art and in Women in the Arts, I will certainly not need to introduce Lois Mailou Jones (1905-1988). Often associated with the Harlem Renaissance, her
work can be found in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Muscarelle Museum of Art, and The Phillips Collection. I am proud to present an original watercolour painting by the artist which dates from the late 1940s or early 1950s.
Jones was born in Boston, Massachusetts to a father who became the first African-American to earn a law degree from Suffolk Law School. Jones's parents encouraged her to draw and paint using watercolors during her childhood. She held her first solo exhibition at the age of seventeen in Martha's Vineyard.
He career began in the 1930s and she continued to produce art work until her death in 1998 at the age of 92. Her style shifted and evolved multiple times in response to influences in her life, especially her extensive travels. She felt that her greatest contribution to the art world was "proof of the talent of black artists". Her work echoes her pride in her African roots and American ancestry.
In 1937, Jones received a fellowship to study in Paris at the Académie Julian, bringing her to France for the first time. The French were appreciative of her paintings and talent and Loïs Mailou Jones was thrilled at the country’s racial tolerance, so different from her reality in the United States.
She summered in France annually from 1945 to 1953, sharing studio with her lifelong friend Celine Marie Tabary in Cabris, France.
It was during one of these sojourns that the lovely work presented here was created.
Our painting depicts the village of Tourettes sur Loup, just north of Nice, in the Provence Cote d'Azur region, about 14 miles from Cabris.
Please note its similarities with her painting "Arreau, Hautes-Pyrénées" in the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Her portrayal of the picturesque village nestled in a valley evokes landscape paintings by Paul Cézanne, a stylistic influence she acknowledged.
Over the course of the following 10 years, Jones exhibited at the Phillips Collection, Seattle Art Museum, National Academy of Design, the Barnett-Aden Gallery, Pennsylvania's Lincoln University, Howard University, galleries in New York, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. In 1952, the book Loïs Mailou Jones: Peintures 1937–1951 was published, reproducing more than one hundred of her art pieces completed in France.At the Barnett-Aden Gallery, Jones exhibited with a group of prominent black artists, such as Jacob Lawrence and Alma Thomas.
