Georges Scott, or Scott de Plagnolle (his full name wasGeorges Bertin Scott de Plagnolle ), was born on June 10 1873 in Paris, he was a painter and illustrator. He studied at the Alsatian School in Paris, where he drew a lot: “I have always drawn […]. My father was a painter and illustrator. I was born in a workshop ”. Fatherless in 1884, he studied at the Beaux-Arts, then was one of the pupils of Édouard Detaille, he was a member of French artists outside the competition in 1897. Painter and illustrator, he worked for various periodicals, including Cocorico and L'Illustration where his first drawing was published on March 19, 1892 (“La catastrophe d'Anderlues”). In 1911, the Minister of War Adolphe Messimy asked Scott and Detaille for studies to renovate the uniforms of the French Army: if their projects were not adopted, some were published in newspapers such as L'Illustration in March 1912 he covered as a war correspondent for the newspaper the First Balkan War, with the Bulgarian Army. (mount size 39.5 by 33 cm., 15 ½ by 13 in.) Provenance: Estate of the artist Exhibited: London, Sally Hunter Fine Art, Albert Rutherston, Drawings, Theatre Designs and other Treasures, 2016, no.65 The present work was illustrated in Cymbeline, published by Ernest Benn in 1923. The series was a collaboration between Rutherston and Harley Granville-Barker following on from their work together 11 years earlier at the Savoy Theatre and celebrating the quatercentenary of the Shakespeare Folio edition. Born Albert Daniel Rothenstein, he was the youngest of the six children of Moritz and Bertha Rothenstein, German-Jewish immigrants who had settled in Bradford, Yorkshire in the 1860s. He and his siblings proved to be a hugely talented and artistic family, his elder brother became Sir William Rotherstein (1872-1945), the artist and director of the Royal College of Art; two of his other siblings, Charles Rutherston and Emily Hesslein, both accumulated major modern British and French art collections and his nephew Sir John Rothenstein was direct of the Tate Gallery. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School before moving to London in 1898 to study at the Slade School of Art where he became close friends with Augustus John and William Orpen. He met Walter Sickert during a painting holiday in France in 1900 and by introducing Sickert to Spencer Gove became instrumental in the beginning of the Camden Town Group. He was one of Sickert’s most frequent companions and was one of the original members of the Fitzroy Street Group. Original drawing on paper Handsigned Unique piece EDOUARD (EDY) LEGRAND French, 1892–1970 Edy-Legrand, whose real name is Edward Louis Warschawsky Leon, born in Bordeaux in 1892, died in Bonnieux in 1970. He was a French illustrator and painter. He made the first part of his career in advertising illustration and literature. Later, his work was devoted to painting. He attended the Ecole des Beaux Artes in Paris, the Art Academy in Munich, and then lived and worked for Tolmer Publishing House in Paris for much of his career. After the Second World War, he spent much time in New York where he worked as an illustrator for various publishers. Legrand was born in Bordeaux, France to a French mother and a Russian-Jewish father. In 1919, as a young painter , Edy-Legrand created the first children's book, Macao and Cosmage or experience happiness, for the New French Review. The compositions are colored by hand by Jean Saudé. This album was greeted with exceptional praise since the 1980s and applauded as a milestone in the history of illustrated book for children. In 1932, Edy-Legrand participated in the first World Exhibition of engraved works of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he represented France. In this exhibit was also work by Picasso, Matisse and Derain, but Edy-Legrand was the only one to receive an honorable mention. Subsequently, he moved to Rabat , in Morocco. Of this period, Jacques Majorelle wrote: "In Morocco, Edy-Legrand is fascinated by the elements of life that he discovered in the unceasing movement of crowds and the vibration of color by the play of light on the costumes and decor. The show is so totally pictorial he complains, at first, to be obliged to fight against the temptation to faithfully reproduce external reality [...]. FRANCES WATT (1923-2009) London Stock Exchange Waiter Pen and ink and watercolour wash, unframed, in mount only 17 by 13 cm., 6 ½ by 5 in. Edith Frances Watt was born in Falkirk in 1923. In 1926 the family moved to Switzerland when her father, the Rev Thomas Meikle Watt, was appointed permanent chaplain to the Church of Scotland in Geneva. Her father died in 1938 and the family returned to Scotland where Frances continued her schooling at Aberdeen High School for Girls. Her mother moved the family to London in about 1940 and they settled in Southwood Lawn Road, Highgate. Frances attended the Hornsey School of Art were she gained a National Diploma in Design before going on to study at the Byam Shaw School in London, where she later taught. In Highgate she was a member of the Highgate Artists Group, which included Sir Kyffin Williams among its exhibiting members, and she was also an active member of the Highgate Choral Society, designing many programmes and posters for its productions in the 1950s. In the early 1960s she was commissioned by the Council of the Stock Exchange to record the daily life in the Square Mile. This is the original character study art for the very first Fillmore East concert Poster by David Edward Byrd in 1968, it is featured on page 74 of the new coffee table book "Poster Child, The Psychedelic Art and Technicolor Life of David Edward Byrd". The poster was for a concert at the Fillmore East featuring, Traffic, Blue Cheer and Buttery. An image of the finished poster is shown in this listing just for reference to the figures. David Edward Byrd created some of the most important and memorable Classic Theatre and Rock and Roll images from the 1960s and 70s. David created ALL of the Art for Bill Graham’s Fillmore East, including their Program covers and Rock posters, the art for Jimi Hendrix’s first Fillmore East appearance, The Rolling Stones 1969 World Tour art, The Who’s Performance of Tommy at the New York Metropolitan Opera House and The Fillmore, and The Grateful Dead Swell Dance Concert to name only a few.
