Rendered in watercolor, pencil and chalk during Hopper's brief sojourn to Charleston, South Carolina in 1929, this vista captures the serene southern beauty of the famous historic promenade. The Battery, Charleston, S.C. showcases Hopper’s ability to compellingly illustrate the quintessential aspects of American identity through landscapes. This painting is one of eleven recorded watercolors that Hopper produced during his three-week family visit to Charleston in the summer of 1929. The majority of these South Carolina watercolor compositions are housed in museums and esteemed private collections. This composition renders the Battery, an iconic Charleston landmark that served as a historic defensive seawall during the Civil War and has remained a popular promenade for tourists and locals alike today. A delightful departure from the famed American’s beloved depictions of New England, this Charleston watercolor captures the subtropical beauty of the Southern locale and reveals Hopper's profound mastery of rendering light and water. The composition features seaside benches framed by South Carolina's iconic palmetto trees and includes a Civil War-era cannon in the background. In the distance, Charleston Harbor extends into the horizon, with the historic Fort Sumter subtly discernible. Rendered in gentle white, blue and green hues, Hopper’s view of the Charleston shore presents an idyllic scene that captures both the Battery's storied history and also the tranquility and beauty of the seaside promenade. The Battery, Charleston, S.C. was among the works that remained in Hopper's Truro home until the artist's passing in 1967. In 1970, this painting was bequeathed to the Whitney Museum of American Art along with much of Hopper's personal collection. This painting resided in the Whitney's collection until our recent acquisition. Hopper's ability to imbue everyday scenes with profound emotional depth has placed him among the most studied and celebrated artists in American history. Represented in almost every major art institution in the United States and worldwide, his iconic works, such as Nighthawks and Automat, have transcended the realm of fine art to become cultural touchstones. Watercolors from his distinguished Charleston collection are currently held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Gibbes Museum and the Whitney Museum. This work has been displayed in no fewer than nine exhibitions and 48 museums around the world and is illustrated in Gail Levin's catalogue raisonné. An essential figure in the German avant-garde, Nolde’s highly modern oeuvre stands as an important precursor to the Abstract Expressionists of the mid-20th century. With its vivid colors and emotional intensity, the present work is exemplary of his output, containing all of the best characteristics of his mature style. Brilliant, amorphous fields of color suggest the vast, marshy landscape of Nolde’s native Schleswig-Holstein region near the German-Danish border. The artist’s application of paint is powerful and dramatic, conveying with a few brushstrokes the impression of passing storm clouds, allowing light and sky to peek through and illuminate the colors of his landscape. A sense of fluidity and immediacy were of great importance to Nolde. He once said, “I try to avoid all thinking. A vague concept of color and luminosity suffices, and the picture evolves during the act of painting.” The flow and spontaneity of watercolor lent themselves well to Nolde’s creative approach, and he achieved a vibrancy in the medium that is unsurpassed. Nolde is considered one of the most important exponents of German Expressionism and was one of the most prominent representatives of the avant-garde in Germany. His participation in the seminal group Die Brücke (The Bridge) links him to one of the earliest artists' associations which had a crucial impact on the development of modern art. His interplay of color and form set him apart from his contemporaries, and his work is recognized as a monumental step toward modernism. However, Nolde’s work was derided in his day by the Nazi regime in Germany, and he was forbidden from painting. Deemed too “decadent,” 33 of his works were displayed in the infamous Entartete Kunst, Degenerate Art Exhibition in Munich in 1937, labeling the artist's works as a “threat” to Germany. The Nazi Party destroyed hundreds of Nolde's works and confiscated over one thousand more — the greatest number of any artist — highlighting the rarity of the present composition. A Fishing Boat at Sea, Late Mid-Century Gouache on Paper

Located in Cotignac, FR

French gouache on paper of a boat travelling the seas. The work is unsigned but dated 22/11/70. Presented in simple gilt frame with handcut mount. A really engaging and powerful painting. The artist has managed to capture the swell of the sea, the movement of the boat listing gently to one side, the slightly rusty hull, the moody sky filled with all the seagulls following behind, which suggests it might be a fishing boat. They have used a limited but strong colour palette, blues, blacks and greys and then just to highlight and catch the eye a splash of green to represent the starboard or right bow light.
